State Prison
Winter, 1964
My name is Adam. Adam Kennedy, but here I’m called Dead Man. That’s what they call us all. We all die. Us, you, them and my art. Me? I’ll die here. This prison is all I’ve known for awhile now. The occasional flickering from the aging fluorescent lighting, the prayer from the monster in the cell adjacent to mine, all of it is home to me now.
In the next cell I can hear him whimpering so I call out to him. Your god, if such a being were to exist, cannot and will not save you now. You’ve committed your sins and you’re beyond redemption.
He coughs fitfully and I can hear him crying like little girl lost. Not one person that passes through here, not one of the expendable few shunned by society, live to see many more years go by.
I can hear them coming down the corridor outside my cell. I feel my heart begin to pound and the adrenaline rush through my body, curling my toes. I watch closely as the three guards stop in front of his cell. Kenji Tanaka. The Asian crybaby.
The guards pull him forcefully from his sanctuary. He’s a pitiful sight, slumped over and sniffling. My excitement increases as I watch them drag Tanaka down the corridor and out of sight. My hands grip my knees tightly as I wait in silent anticipation.
Oh, bliss and Heaven. The ever-more frequent release of death. I can almost countdown the seconds to the main event. The ring master flips the switch and … 3… 2… 1…
I raise my eyes to the ceiling and watch the lights suddenly become more brilliant and dazzling, and just as suddenly dim to a candle’s brightness.
I release my pent up anticipation with a maniac cackle as I hear his screams travel down the corridor to dance upon my eardrums.
Chapter One
Spring, 1948
The summer heat had yet to seep into the sleepy little town of Cedar Rapids. Its residents were leisurely running errands along Main Street. They were hindered only a little by the group of young boys idling outside the local General Store.
Billy, the biggest in the group of five shoved his hands into his pockets and looked at the others. So what shall we do today lads? Fishing in the creek? Sneak into the pictures? Steal some of my old man’s cigarettes and smoke ‘em under the bridge?
He laughed to himself and brushed his light brown hair back into his cap.
The youngest of the bunch, was ten year old Johnny. He was small and skinny, with a mop of dark brown hair. We did all that yesterday!
He folded his arms across his chest. It made him look like a pouting toddler.
However, the twins, Collin and Calvin, agreed with him. Yeah!
They exclaimed simultaneously. Adam Kennedy was the oldest at twelve, but held the title only because he was born two months ahead of Billy.
Seems to me we should go find something new to do.
Adam suggested in his quiet voice.
Billy jammed his hands back in his pockets and kicked at a bit of dirt. Ok, since you’re so smart, what’re we going to do then?
Johnny, always looking for a reason not to be the baby of the group responded. I found out where my old man hides his liquor.
A grin spread across Billy’s face. Now that’s a good start Johnny!
A grin appeared on Johnny’s face, pleased that he had contributed to the discussion. Collin and Calvin, eager to impress, added their input. We found a clearing in the woods outside our house last week
, said Collin.
It’s great for catching snakes and lizards
, added Calvin. Adam stepped away from the group.
I’m in, but I need to run an errand for my mother first. I’ll meet you guys there when I’m done.
He moved closer to the entrance of the General Store.
Billy nodded to himself. I’ll go with Johnny to get his old man’s liquor, then we’ll all meet up at Collin and Calvin’s in about twenty minutes shall we say?
Happy with that plan, Billy
