An Amazing Journey - Wesley Green

"The heights by great men reached and kept

Were not attained by sudden flight, But they, while their companions slept, Were toiling upward in the night."

    HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW

Timeless Core Values and Enduring Purpose

God knows what we need before we need it. He starts providing for our needs before he reveals it. This is proven in the fact of the creation of the world. In the book of Genesis we are informed that God made the earth and furnished it. He made the sea with all the fishes and whatever other creatures that is in it. He formed the clouds in various sizes and shapes and filled them with rain cells. Then He made man out of the dust of the earth to have dominion over all living things. This dominion would not come easily. Man is still struggling for power and to enjoy the blessings of life. He lost the capacity to successfully control himself and his fellowman. Only as he turns back to the God he rejected, can he recover himself, and that search is purely a matter of Faith. Faith becomes the process by which we find fellowship with God. Man’s redemption is described in the Bible. There are many stories which illustrate the history of the relationship between man and God.

Sometimes God takes us on a mission in order to teach us about what He can do with us.

In Genesis 12, God’s call to Abram to follow Him to the promise land, and Abram’s subsequent obedience and all the development that followed, further explains God’s love for us. John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

God takes man through the long, winding road, to accomplish His will in man. I believe God’s will that there be a ChristWay Baptist Church (CBC) was long in the making before it was revealed to us. When God called me to the ministry, I accepted the call, but like Abram I could not see all that He had in mind for me. All I heard was Follow Me. Now as we look back through the first ten years, we can see what God does with those of us who take the Journey with Him. I wish I could have seen the end, for then I would have followed Him even better in the beginning - For we walk by faith, not by sight. I can truly say this was indeed An Amazing Journey.

Growing Up: My Birth, the Power of Family Values and Community Support

My success can be traced back to personal core values of Christian faith and the influence of my parents.

My mother Ivy was born in Portland and my father Samuel was born in St. Ann, Jamaica. Seven children were born of the marriage between my mother and father. My parents were loving, kind, jovial, and helpful. Even though they were not professionals, they did their very best to see to it we went as far in school as possible. We grew up in a quiet home, where they taught us to be respectful.

I was the middle child. I was born in a little place in St. Mary, Jamaica, called Jack’s River. It is a quiet community. We were not exposed to the distractions of the town so it made it easy for us to respect each other. My parents had four boys and three girls, two years apart in age. We grew up together.

The primary school (middle school) and elementary school were the same. We went from A Class to B Class and all the way to 6th Class. When I was growing up, children went to school at 6 ½ years of age. We could not go to high school, but my parents saw to it that we went as high in school as we could.

On Sundays my parents sent us to church, although they themselves did not attend. It was Church on Sundays and school from Monday to Friday. At home, we played marbles around the yard, jacks, and cricket. My mother and father were strict believers in good behavior and they taught us that we must show manners to everyone, especially our elders. Our teachers and almost anyone could spank us if we misbehaved outside the home. Our parents instilled in us that we must respect others and call adults by their titles: Mr., Miss and Mrs. The oldest child was always in charge in the absence of mother and dad.

    A Tragedy or a Blessing?

"Adversity is a springboard to great achievement."

During Christmastime various groups celebrated what is called John Canoe—we said John Kunu. I didn’t learn the correct name until later—a time when people dressed up, representing various animals, like cows and goats. They danced and played drums up and down the streets, collecting money, dancing and drumming.

This particular time I was with them, dancing and playing with them—even though I was a child of 14—I was not officially in the group but as I moved around, playing with them a motorcycle came up and accidentally knocked me down, breaking my left foot. I ended up in the hospital on Christmas day.

I was to act in a Christmas play, on behalf of my school, but I was in the hospital. The play was going to be at the church, which was near the school. In those days most of the schools were church schools. Unfortunately, on Christmas day, when the performance was to take place, I was still in the hospital. After six weeks in the hospital, the Pastor of the church whom I had never spoken to, Rev. O. T. Johnson, apparently heard of me and came to the hospital to visit, along with other members of the church. I didn’t like it when church members came to the hospital because they would sing, pray and tell how sorry they were for me. I wasn’t scared but this would make me cry and feel sorry for myself after they left. However, they did continue to visit and I was grateful. After I was discharged from the hospital, about two weeks later, I began walking. To show my appreciation to Rev. Johnson I began attending church.

Take a Risk (it may bear good fruit)

What is hidden in the heart shall be brought forth to light. Sometimes God keeps His plans until He begins the process of Revelation.
