For the Lord has created a new thing on the earth: a woman protects a man. Jeremiah 31:22

    Chapter 1

Joseph Fishkopf had overheard Sarah chatting in the law library with one of her girlfriends, and it had given him an idea. Joseph had always wanted to date a good looking woman, and Sarah Lebevoll seemed to fit all his requirements. She was attractive—about five feet nine inches tall, slim, shoulder length sandy hair, hazel eyes, high cheekbones, nice shape—but not beautiful, not ravishing, by no means untouchable. Her hips were a little wide, and her ankles were a tad thick, and her eyes were a fraction of an inch too close together, and her hair had a way of frizzing up when the humidity was high, and her smile, when she deigned to show it, was less than radiant.

Joseph was glad Sarah had some drawbacks, because he had plenty of his own. He was only about five six, kind of dumpy looking, his shirttail always seemed to be hanging out no matter how many times he tucked it back in, his graying hair was thinning even though he, like Sarah, was only thirty two, his nose had a cockeyed slant to it, his teeth were marginal, and he perspired a lot. Moreover, he could never seem to think of what to say around women in a social setting.

Yet Joseph had one thing going for him. He was generally thought to be a sure bet to make partner in his law firm, the third largest in town and reputedly the most profitable. If it were true, which was what Joseph had always heard, that what most women really wanted from a man were financial security, a nice lifestyle and a soul mate who was good at what he did, then Joseph could make a decent case for himself.

He worked hard at his legal practice, terribly hard, and he had done so now for eight long years with hardly a weekend off. His workaholic schedule no doubt explained a good deal of his social awkwardness and worn out appearance. It was understandable that he often resembled a human slug trolling about the halls mumbling incoherently to no one in particular. Under the circumstances, Joseph liked to tell himself, who wouldn't behave just like him?

But even if Sarah were vaguely attracted to the notion that Joseph was on the cusp of reaping a financial bonanza, one in which she could perhaps share if she played her cards right, he still needed to find some way to break the ice with her, to come up with a clever line, to start the ball rolling. Joseph and Sarah had never spoken to each other except in a professional context. She had been a paralegal at his firm for over two years, and they had been on many cases together. Joseph had often tried to make some friendly overture to her, but at the critical moment he could never seem to figure out what to say. And if he did think of something, the words always got lost somewhere between his brain and his mouth. Joseph simply had no self confidence around women.

That was why Sarah's conversation with her friend that morning had intrigued him. She was discussing her most recent date, apparently with some nondescript accountant with bad skin, and the subject had quickly turned to what they had done after dinner and a movie. Sarah noted casually, even blandly, that they had gone to his apartment where they had wrestled. She did not explain how the wrestling match had begun, or what had led them to tussle in the middle of the poor fellow's living room. She simply reported that she had quickly overpowered the young man and in the process wrenched his shoulder, which had apparently led him to terminate the relationship with much moaning and whimpering. When her friend asked how she had managed to defeat him, Sarah cooly and succinctly observed that she was naturally very strong and liked to wrestle.

This was the thing that Joseph had been longing for, an inside track into Sarah's consciousness, a way to get her attention, perhaps even to stir up her passions. Now all he had to do was think of a crisp line, a few words that would capture the essence of any future liaison between them, a nice efficient way Joseph could quickly show Sarah that they were on the same page with respect to their tastes and pleasures. Of course, Joseph was no wrestler and had never really thought much about the topic one way or the other. But Sarah apparently was, and that was all that mattered to Joseph, at least at that moment, when he was in the throes of horny passion.

As usual, however, Joseph's mind, which was so quick at dissecting the most complex of legal arguments, turned to mush when the subject was women. This was why Joseph was surprised, startled even, that when Sarah entered his office later that day bearing some routine document for his signature, he uttered what to him was a strikingly original pick up line, which he somehow had devised right at that very instant: You'll have to wrestle me for it.

Sarah abruptly shot him a sharp quick look, narrowed her eyes and gulped mildly before responding with the amazingly reassuring words: Okay, Joseph, I'll wrestle you, which she promptly did after closing and locking the door to Joseph's office and carefully pulling down the blinds.

The match did not go as Joseph had expected, which was understandable since Joseph had never
