Introduction
Orthostatic hypotension is an enfeebling body disorder that may be chronic and not easily treatable. It affects the normal blood pressure balance in the body and is characterized by dizziness and lightheadedness immediately on assuming a standing position. Therapies involved have the objective of targeting the improvement of those postural symptoms, prolonging standing duration, and improving functionality in your day-to-day activity.
What is orthostatic hypotension?
Simply put, orthostatic is an upright posture while hypotension is having low blood pressure. Orthostatic hypotension is a combination of the two words to mean a disorder in which a sudden decrease in blood pressure occurs when you quickly assume a standing position.
The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and also the American Autonomic Society (AAS) define this condition as a systolic (heart contracting phase) blood pressure fall of at least 20 mmHg, and or a diastolic (heart relaxing phase) blood pressure decrease or fall of at least 10 mmHg within 3 minutes of assuming a standing posture. (The symbol ‘mmHg’ unit means ‘millimeters of mercury’ which is the standard unit used for the measurement of pressure; just like ‘mph’ means ‘miles per hour’ and measures the speed).
What happens in the event of manifesting orthostatic hypotension?
The events surrounding orthostatic hypotension are numerous. The sudden assumption of a standing position causes your blood to pool or collect in the lower limb’s blood vessels. This collection or pooling causes a decrease in the amount of blood that gets carried back to your heart by your veins. Subsequently, the blood that gets pumped out by the heart the next time progressively becomes less. This results in a sudden fall in blood pressure as the heart can only pump
