About this ebook

What's Bathology?
Remember 'Lather, rinse, repeat'? Scientists have recently shown that we can revitalize our brains as we do our skin and hair: With only a few minutes a day of the right kind of repetitious behavior, we can reshape our neurology, thereby improving our resilience, well-being and overall vitality. But unlike our skin and hair, it's not as simple as applying our favorite cream or shampoo daily.

Rewiring our brains takes mindfully and regularly directing our attention to positive thoughts and images, and then savoring them until they soak into our long-term memories. Where better to soak and savor than in the tub? In the tub, we have a moment alone. A daily routine. Without distractions, in the bath we have a chance to cleanse our minds while cleansing our bodies. Nature and nurture. In the tub we can savor and soak with a bar of soap in our hands instead of a plastic bottle, and an inspiring story in our hearts instead of a daily worry.

Rather than regurgitating yesterday's troubles, the first moments of our waking day could be better spent refreshing our state of mind. What stories do you tell yourself as you begin your day? In Splash City, we offer you a new story.

In today's fast-paced information age, many live their lives in a state of overwhelm and paralysis. This is the result of what we at Splash City Studios call the "How-to" world. Like eating empty carbs, we stuff ourselves with information in the hopes of improving our lives and end up malnourished and wanting more, never achieving the results we were looking for, and often becoming disillusioned and cynical. Our craving can never be fully satisfied, for information is not transformation.

At Splash City Studios, we have developed a new, common sense approach that is nourishing to our souls. Our fun and colorful characters are not How-to style experts, nor are they judges or coaches. They are Cartoon Mentors with heartfelt stories that are therapeutically woven to take us to the pinnacle of transformation. Our series of Life Fables revitalize the lost arts of Imagination, Self-Reliance and Will.

Deborah WhitakerDeb has always been fascinated by the transformative power of story. As a young girl, words charmed her in their ability to weave ideas into shape and color. Unifying her early excursions into both poetry and psychological research, she wrote and published a thought-provoking parable on the art and science of self-love called Looking Glass Sky, which arose from her years in private practice as a psychotherapist. Deb’s love of story next led her deep into the fabric of screenwriting, from which she spun four feature length screenplays based on the mythic hero’s (heroine’s) journey format. Threaded throughout the lives of each of the leading ladies in these inspirational stories, you’ll find hers. They include an ageless astronaut, a 40’s jazz singer, a Clipper ship Captain, and a mother with a deep dedication to both her daughter and the earth. Deb’s latest heroines, including Ms. Bee Haven, Miss Guided Light and Velocity, brings full circle her childhood passion to paint the world 3D.Craig CloutierCraig’s passion in life is to uncover the art and science of the dream. This passion has taken him on many exciting journeys, starting with a bicycle ride across America at the age of 20, operating a successful Tropical Design business in New York City, participating in the Albert Schweitzer foundation, working on Tony Robbins' events staff for 8 years, building “Airships” in the 80’s, and to producing, directing and hosting the television series “Power of a Dream.” Craig is a musician (bass guitar), a designer ("it's all about form and function!"), and meditates best while roller skating. He regularly chats with plants, animals and bugs. Some of the extraordinary stops on his dream journey include the time Tony Robbins stopped the firewalk to add more shovels of hot coals just as he was about to take his first firewalk, his exclusive interview with the man who saved the Hubble telescope; and the time he first set eyes upon Mzzz Pink on a hot July day at York Beach, Maine.

    Where Magic Happens

    A Sioux Indian Story

"My grandfather took me to the fish pond

on the farm when I was about seven,

and he told me to throw a stone into the water.

He told me to watch the circles created by the stone.

Then he asked me to think of myself as that stone person.

"You may create lots of splashes in your life

but the waves that come from those splashes

will disturb the peace of all your fellow creatures," he said.

    "Remember that you are responsible

for what you put in your circle

and that circle will also touch many other circles.

You will need to live in a way that allows

the good that comes from your circle to send

the peace of that goodness to others.

The splash that comes from anger or jealousy

will send those feelings to other circles.

    You are responsible for both."

That was the first time I realized each person

creates the inner peace or discord

that flows out into the world.

We cannot create world peace if we are riddled

with inner conflict, hatred, doubt, or anger.

We radiate the feelings and thoughts that we hold inside,

whether we speak them or not.

Whatever is splashing around inside of us

is spilling out into the world,

creating beauty or discord with all other circles of life.

    Remember the eternal wisdom:

    Whatever you focus on expands."

    Awaken to Wonder

On a hot, July day my partner Craig and I were lazily sipping martinis at an outdoor bistro in York Beach, Maine. In a surreal flash, a young woman rode by on a pink polka dot bicycle wearing a matching pink polka dot outfit, while talking on her neon green cellphone, the only thing surrounding her person that wasn’t pink.

We were star struck. We just knew there was something magical about this fashionista we nicknamed Mzzz Pink. For days we couldn't stop wondering about her, and then in another flash, we suddenly realized who she was. Mzzz Pink was the Madonna of an entire magical cartoon city we were about to create. When that young woman pedaled by dripping in pink, we caught a glimpse of our future.

When asked to describe Splash City's beginnings, I often told this story, and then watched the reactions of the listeners. Shoulders relaxed. Heads nodded in rhythm to the stories peaks and valleys. Imagining Mzzz Pink, listener's eyes sparkled as if they were present at the event. So just what experience were we really sharing?

Perhaps it was 10 or 20 years ago, perhaps it was yesterday, but at some point in their life, they had a similar experience. As I shared my story, they were most likely internally re-experiencing theirs; the day they brought home their new puppy, met a beloved celebrity at a coffee shop, or saw a double rainbow glistening over their house. The type of experience didn't matter. Something unexpected and extraordinary entered their life for a fleeting moment and then became a cherished memory that lasted for years. Why? What was so special about those moments?

When Mzzz Pink first showed up in our lives, we couldn't have answered that question. Yet the travels that would come after following her lead helped us not only to understand, but to create a revolutionary method to both illuminate and sustain such a state. Over time, we came to understand that it's not the experience itself, but the all too rare state of being that the unique experience prompted; a state of wonder.

Wonder is defined by a standard dictionary as a feeling of surprise mingled with admiration, caused by something beautiful, unexpected, unfamiliar, or inexplicable. We often see wonder as something that happens to us, and mostly to children. Typically, we associate wonder with moments like the first time we set eyes on the Grand Canyon, the Hubble telescope photos, or even an epic movie, but generally speaking we don't recognize wonder as a state by which to operate our lives.

Whether we realize it or not, from the moment we open our eyes in the morning to the time our heads hit the pillow at night, we function in some type of state, usually dependent upon our environment. This is commonly referred to as our 'state of mind,' and generally understood to mean the sum total of a person's neurological processes.

Our state is not necessarily something we are fully aware of. A few years ago, after a very mucky divorce, my state resembled a ragged silk dress. Once fresh and refined, my state became worn and tattered, with only slight glimmers of its former sheen. Fortunately, months after the divorce was final, a dear friend surprised me with a ten day trip to Hawaii. The trip came as a much needed cleansing. At the time, I could
