    This book is dedicated to Popsey, my Granddad, who’s humble beginnings left an impression on my mind.

To save the best for last, I would like to thank God for the gift to write and for granting me freedom in the Lord. Thank you.

    Notes from the author: There are references in Kansas Annie to the promised land and scriptures pertaining to the Israelites’ promised land. The Israelites, under severe persecution, cried out to God and were delivered from their slavery to the Egyptians. They wandered in the wilderness for forty years because of grumbling, complaining, and lack of trusting God. Through faith, they conquered and came into their promised land. No matter the circumstances in our lives, I believe that trusting God is the key to our promised land, and the Holy Spirit is the engine, and our peace. The land and any earthly thing is not what brings peace and joy; rather it is our relationship with God. When we trust God, we don’t have to worry anymore. He is in control, and we can rest in Him.

    Introduction

    Grade School Afternoon

    1923

    What do you want to eat? asked Annie.

    I don’t know. What do you have? asked Daniel.

    We have eggs and milk. I think we should get some eggs. There are some right here under this chicken. The chicken squawked as Annie pulled it up by its tail feathers and extracted an egg from the nest. She held the egg up, like it was a golden egg. Wild eyed, she felt as sneaky as a bushy tailed fox with her prize.

    How do we cook it? he asked.

    Do you have a match?

    Daniel lit the match as she held up the egg. The egg got rather hot and started to burn. Annie dropped the hot egg, and the match fell into the hay and caught fire.

    Annie cried, My hand.....burns! The barn is burning! The chickens! Annie fainted.

    Daniel thought fast on his feet, and pulled Annie outside by her overall straps with one hand, and the cow with the other hand. The cow stepped on Annie’s foot, breaking her toes in the process. A few chickens got loose, while the rest went to meet their maker. By the time the flames reached the roof, Annie’s Pa was heaving buckets of water on the barn, as Daniel sat crying, stroking Annie’s hair.

    When the fire was finally out, Pa took Annie to bed and called the Doc. Daniel refused to leave her side, but the Doc reassured him that she would be fine with a little rest and aloe vera for the burns.

    Doc Green said, I’m gonna set your bones back in place and your foot in a cast.

    Annie felt humiliated, as she didn’t want them to see her cry, but the pain was more than she could bear. She bawled puddles of tears as he set her bones back in place. Her foot was back and blue.

    Doc left, and Pa said, We will come up with a way to rebuild the barn. I’m just glad that you are ok, Freckles. Kissing her cheek and patting Daniel on the head, he left the room.

    Are you mad at me Annie? Daniel asked.

    No. I’m not mad. She paused, I guess you.....saved me. So......thanks Danny.

    He reached out and held her hand, as she dozed off into a deep sleep.

    * * *

    After church, Annie sat under the pew toying with her braids.

    Climbing over the church pews, Annie’s rag doll, Sasafrass, was almost within her reach. Running up behind Daniel, she lunged at him, tackling him to the ground. She heard a tear as the lace on her dress came asunder when it snagged her cast. Daniel yanked her red braids as Annie pulled Sasafrass free and smacked Daniel in the face. Reaching for her braids, he tore off Sasafrass’s arm. Wild eyed, Annie started crying about her torn doll and torn dress. Daniel relinquished the dolls arm to Annie and said, I’m sorry Annie, I was just playin’ around. My Ma can sew her back together.

    Annie wished she had a mother to fix her doll. Although it had been several years since her mother’s passing, it was still a sore spot for her—somewhat like the darker bruising that appears days after the initial injury. Annie looked at his big eyes, parted hair, and chunky cheeks, and said through her big teeth, Danny, I hate you.

    Annie, you can’t hate me over a stupid doll.

    Oh, yes I can, and she is not stupid. She loves me more than you do.

    I doubt that, he said as he snuck in a kiss to her cheek. She sat dumbfounded as she watched him run as fast as lightning to the door where he turned around and smiled at Annie who was scowling. Annie sat there near the altar and cried. Daniel had hurt her, and she didn’t like the way it felt. So, she put up a wall, and said, He will not hurt me again. I will protect myself and my doll from being broken by him. She felt the invisible walls moving in; blocking her from him. Yet, she didn’t know how to move past them and still protect herself from the hurt and pain. So, she hardened her heart and decided to try and live with the walls, since she couldn’t live without them.

    PART I

    CRYING OUT

    Psalms 95 NIV

    1 Oh come, let us sing to the LORD!

    Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.

    2 Let us come before His presence with thanksgiving;

    Let us shout joyfully to Him with psalms.

    3 For the LORD is the great God,

    And the great King above all gods.

    4 In His hand are the deep places of the earth;

    The heights of the hills are His also.

    5 The sea is His, for He made it;

    And His hands formed
