The feud started on their first day of kindergarten, when Ethan Ford dropped an entire handful of sand on the top of Arin Lockhart’s head. Arin, who had never taken anybody’s crap in all of her five years, simply shook her head upside down to get out what she could, and glared at him, biding her time.

Shortly before it was time to go home that afternoon, when everyone was emptying their cubbies and filling their backpacks, Arin walked up behind Ethan and dropped a piece of chewed gum in his hair.

Ethan’s mother flipped out when she came to pick him up, as did Arin’s mother. A meeting was set up between them and the principal, Mrs. Knight.

The school had a policy that gave the kids a small amount of control over their own punishments, within reason. Since two children were involved, Mrs. Knight let them decide each other’s punishment.

I think she should have to wash the blackboard every day for… a bazillion days! Ethan yelled when the principal asked him what he thought should be done about Arin.

    Two, Arin said, rather calmly.

    Six, Ethan said.

    Four.

Fine. Four days of washing the blackboard, Mrs. Knight interrupted before they fought again. She turned to Arin. And Ethan’s punishment?

He has to wash the desks every day for 30 days.

Ethan immediately came back with, Two!

    Twelve, Arin
