    BEFORE THE DREAMTIME

    Part One

The Thing From The Time Before Time

What in blue blazes is it? Dean stared at the corpse in astonishment. It lay sprawled upon its back, membranous wings extended wide. The body was shaped like a woman’s, covered in scales like a reptile. It’s got bird’s talons on its feet and hands, wings like a bat sproutin’ from its back, and a friggin’ lizard’s head!

Dean returned his firearm to the holster at his hip. Got it whatever it was, with one clean shot. It won’t be menacin’ us again!

Danny stared hard at the dead creature, awestruck and afraid. It lay still, silent. There was a bloody bullet wound in its chest. It’s a thing that don’t belong here, Dean.

    I’ll say!

It’s from a place and time of the far gone past.

    Then what’s it doin’ ‘ere?

    They have returned.

Dean stepped closer, shook his head in disbelief, It’s wearin’ clothes; has a knife in a scabbard strapped to its thigh.

The large, heavy-set man wiped his brow, crouched over the winged humanoid for a closer look. Its small breasts and loins were covered in scant strips of spotted hide, held in place by neatly braided straps of twine. Ornaments of intricately carved bone, set with polished stones, opals, rubies, gleaming quartz, dangled from a necklace. They were spattered in blood. Other gems were set in earrings and decorated bracelets upon the strange being’s ankles and biceps.

Having finished examining the creature’s primitive jewellery, Dean turned his attention to its head, beheld its large and oval shaped, dead and inhuman yet strangely feminine eyes. Its jaws were long and narrow, the mouth lined with smooth lips behind which were rows of fangs.

It’s certainly got a vicious set of teeth. He looked back at Danny and shrugged, Well, at least we now know what’s been killin’ off the local wildlife ‘round ‘ere.

Danny remained at a safe distance, too apprehensive to approach any nearer than he was. Dean stood up, approached his friend, saw the rising fear in his eyes.

Can’t hurt you now, Danny. It’s dead.

The bulky Aborigine took a deep, nervous breath, slowly exhaled, There are more of them; they will be comin’. He nodded his head at the corpse. They are already here. Evil spirits from a time as ancient as this land, a time before even my people came here…

All due respect, don’t gimme me that Dreamtime guff, Danny. Dean’s mood became earnest. I mean no disrespect to your people or your beliefs, but this is no creature out of myth, nor is it some immortal phantom or a devil; it’s obviously as real as you and I, and strange as it seems, it exists in the here and now!

No, I’m not speakin’ about the Dreamtime, Dean; this is much older than that, Danny declared as he indicated the dead she-creature with a tilt of his head. "She’s from an age of chaos, a lost land of demon spirits! My ancestors know them as the Bagini. They have haunted our tribe - the Warragara people - since we first stepped foot on this land, many thousands of years ago.

Every five hundred years they come, snatch children to feed on, murder the women, steal away boys and men! Danny’s eyes betrayed his fear. "- take them back into their ancient realm. Gone forever!

When the Bagini come, they cannot be stopped. Now, they will hunt you as they have hunted us. They will know you have killed one of them, they will have their vengeance!

Dean quietly regarded the corpse for a moment before answering, Bring it on! Got plenty more bullets. Claws, fangs an’ stone age knives an’ spears are no match. But he wasn’t as confident as his words sounded. He felt uneasy. He knew something wasn’t right. The mysterious being he’d just shot didn’t fit into reality as he knew it. Yet here it was, and it had attacked him and Danny without hesitation or fear, eyes ablaze with bloodlust, striking like a demon possessed.

If it hadn’t been for the gun he was carrying, his quick reaction and skilful aim…

The Bagini do not forget. No-one who kills one of them ever escapes, they will come for you now.

Settle down, Danny! This’s all weird as hell, for sure. But it ain’t nothin’ we can’t take care of. As you can see, just like any other livin’ thing, they can be killed. We’ll deal with it.

"Yes, we can kill them, but there are always
