Hello again.I've added Drifta's Quest 2 on this site. Unlikely to be a Drifta's Quest 3 but never say never. I am already working on a new book to fit in between other creative projects. As a mere lad of 68 I have a good few years to tell my stories so I hope people will keep enjoying them.

    Chapter 1

Detective Senior Sergeant Stanley Morris looked around the finished office and said, 'Will you just look at this place, Vince. As big as the Taj Mahal.'

'Now then, Stanley,' Detective Sergeant Vincent Crowe said. 'No need to be jealous. Mind you. Looking at all this high tech gear, I'm not sure if I'm in the police headquarters or on a ship to Mars.'

'Well,' said Morris, giving Detective Constable Fred (Ferret) Ducket's shoulder a squeeze. 'Marrying the Chief's niece can't be a bad thing.'

Slapping Crowe's hand as he went to touch the equipment, Ferret said, 'Yep. I've had it all planned from the day I signed up. Marry the Chief's niece and fly right to the top.'

'We're only winding you up, Ferret,' said Morris. 'All set for Saturday?'

'As far as I know. Poppy gave me strict instructions. Just turn up on the day, otherwise keep out.'

Morris said, 'As best man, I'll get you there or have you arrested for stupidity. Damn, you're a lucky sod. I was right in the thick of it when I got married. A bloody nightmare.'

'I was the same,' said Crowe. 'I just hope your marriage lasts longer than ours did.'

Ferret said, 'I know the stress being in the force can place on a marriage. But Poppy lived with her uncle for years, so she knows what it's all about.'

'That should help when you get called out of a warm bed at three in the morning to look at a dead body,' agreed Morris. 'All the same. You enjoy your last week of freedom.'

Crowe looked at his watch. 'Close to clocking off time.'

'I wish you hadn't said that,' said Morris.

    'Why?'

Morris's phone rang. It was a text from Detective Superintendent Dale Andersen. He showed it to Crowe. 'Because, whenever you do, this happens.'

    Chapter 2

Morris, Crowe and Ducket answered the call and joined grim faced Detective Inspector Dale Andersen and Chief Superintendent Bernard Carver. The Chief waved to spare chairs and they sat.

Andersen glanced at the Chief who just nodded. 'Hmm. Right. What you hear in these four walls, does not get repeated outside. Clear?' The detectives nodded their acquiescence. From a pile of folders, Andersen passed three across the desk. 'Don't open these just yet. I must warn you, the contents of those folders shocked both the Chief and myself. I just wanted you to be prepared.'

'Sir,' said Morris. 'May I just say, if it's as bad as all that, is this something for D C Ducket to be looking at? D S Crowe and I have, well, seen it all, whereas Ducket has limited exposure to the horrors of life.'

'I considered that,' said the Chief. 'I advised D I Andersen it was appropriate.'

Andersen said, 'Go ahead. Open the folders.'

With a collective deep breath, they all opened the folders. Nobody spoke for a moment, then the Chief asked, 'D C Ducket. Are you okay?'

Pale and shaken, Ducket nodded. 'I..I'm okay, sir.'

    'Good man.'

Morris picked up a sheet of paper. 'According to this, what is on these photographs was delivered to the National Security Service this morning?'

'Yes,' said Andersen. 'Senders contact details naturally fictitious. Nothing on the box or packaging as yet.'

    'And there's
