About this ebook

Deep in the forest of Leafwood, I reside among a peaceful community, governed by The Forest Council, which fosters our old traditions and beliefs. Since times long ago, our people have feared the night. The purity of light is sacred to us here and brings us comfort, protecting us from the evil hidden in the dark. The Shadowers are the malevolent beings who threaten to rip apart our calm lives and so we must cast them out. For every person who dies here, a Shadower is born, but no one knows who will be chosen next and the threat hangs over us.

The council is our protector, but are we too confident in our ability to keep the darkness back? Can our traditions protect us against the evil that lurks beyond our forest? The wisest person I know is my grandmother. She raised my sister and I, after our parents were consumed by the darkness, and taught us right from wrong. In our fight against the night, it is my duty to help safeguard Leafwood, as I am a Harvester of Light.

    Prologue

One of my side teeth has been causing me a lot of pain today. I don’t know whether it’s the cool wind aggravating it or just my focus on it that makes it hurt so much. I dread getting ill in any way and always try to avoid seeking medical aid. It isn’t good to need medical help here – it can be fatal! Today it’s a toothache, tomorrow I could be dying! Our medicine is not very advanced, but who can really be the judge of this? As far as we know, our community, residing within the boundaries of this forest, are the only beings in the universe.

This forest has been my home for my entire life. In fact, it has always been our home, for as long as anyone can recall. The trees are thick and densely packed, but allow enough sunlight through to show the forest floor, which is covered in slippery green moss, dirt and various species of mushrooms. But, this forest is more than our home – it is our protector. Beyond its boundaries lies a chain of mountains, stretching as far as the eye can see, yet we dare not venture there – the only beings living in that place are the Shadowers.

Here, in our forest, our universe, light is the fundamental source of power, health and, ultimately, life. When night creeps in and darkness overthrows day, we all return to our homes where we are surrounded by light. We believe that if you are not within the reach of light when night comes, you will be swallowed by the darkness and disappear forever. No one knows for sure what happens to those who are lost, but the elders warn us that the fate of someone consumed by the darkness is to wander the voids of shadows for eternity.

A Shadower is a being who is not scared of the darkness, but feeds on it and thrives. These creatures seek only to cause pain and suffering to the living. We cannot touch them. If we were to harm or even kill one, it would anger the darkness, which would then consume the forest and our world forever. Those who are Shadowers do not willingly choose this life of evil and torment. Instead, it is chosen for them.

The darkness is what our community seeks to avoid. The Harvesters of Light, or Harvesters as we call them, hunt the light during the daytime. These people are gifted with the ability to capture light and bring it back to the forest for our people to use during the dark hours. Without it, our community would be doomed to a life of darkness and hopelessness.

I know this is going to sound crazy, but you know that tooth that was bothering me? Well, I just pulled it out. Seriously, I couldn’t take the pain anymore and, trust me, having one less tooth is a better alternative than leaving your fate to the few medications we have here in the forest. We have a few medicine makers, but they tend to be sicker than the rest of us! You would have to be very desperate to trust their skills.

My grandmother dabbles in the practice of medicine making, but she keeps it simple, attempting only simple remedies for headaches and sleeping problems. She has always had this special talent. The other medicine makers say it is because she sold her soul to a Shadower in an attempt to bribe him into setting her free of the darkness. While my grandmother did have a slight encounter with a Shadower as a child, she denies making any such deal and I believe her, not because she’s family, but because the Shadowers do not understand our language. My grandmother is simply good at making remedies. Unfortunately, she has nothing that could have eased the pain of my tooth.

In order to survive here in this world, there are a few rules that one should remember – always walk in the open areas of the forest, travel in a group whenever possible, and always carry a box of light in case of an emergency. When you open one of these boxes, most of the time the light will taste freedom and escape your grasp before you can stop it. Therefore, it is best to never have need of one! Although they are small, these boxes have saved lives on those rare cases when the users were able to contain the light once it was released. All in all, everything depends upon the Harvesters, without whom none of us would have any reason to hope.
