    Introduction

    Glistening sun-drenched white buildings with red rooftops, narrow maize-like streets and memorials honoring many of the world’s greatest explorers ---- these images all invoke images of Portugal. When you fly into this enchanted land you first notice its long coastline of sandy beaches, tiny bays and coves. After initially regretting I didn’t have an aisle seat on the airplane, I was thankful for my window seat because I could clearly see the coastline as it was awakening to the early dawn.

    The country of Portugal looks like a side portrait of someone with a long thin face with Lisbon representing a nose. From west to south, this old European country is the most southwestern nation of all the European nations. Gazing at the Atlantic Ocean, I thought of historical Portuguese sailors
