About this ebook

A daughter’s mistake.
A mother’s wrath.
An impossible choice.

Sophie’s plans were simple: Leave the supernatural behind and raise a child of her own creation. For twenty years life couldn’t have been better, until the day her daughter showed up on her doorstep bloodied and bruised. They say, “Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned.” But the wrath of a mother, whose only desire was to protect her child, is unfathomable. Those pure of heart can rest easy. However, if you carry the slightest tinge of darkness, beware the Higher Calling.

    Dedication

For the victims: You are not helpless.

For the trapped: It is not hopeless.

For the bereft: Sorrow is a tear that should be wiped away by love and the passage of time.

For the Destroyers: Change is inevitable. You have no right to injure and cause pain. At some point your Sophie may come for you. When you’ve taken your very last breath, it will be too late for shame and sorrow. In the end, we all pay for the damage we’ve caused.

    Prologue

Tears streamed down his cheeks, leaving trails of freshly washed skin. He lifted his chin and finally met my gaze. I-I know you hate me. You have every right to. Just give me another chance. Please!

My heart fluttered for a second. Was he really asking for mercy? What could this monster know of such a word? He’d shown my daughter no mercy. Saying I hate you is the understatement of the century. Loathe, disgust, rage--none of those words suffice for how you make me feel.

His body quivered as he choked out the words, I know I deserve it. I really am sorry! I can change. Let me show you, he pleaded.

A gust of wind kicked up dirt and chaff from the freshly harvested wheat. With calculated movements, I slipped an errant lock of pale hair behind my ear.

His head rapidly moved from side to side as he desperately searched for escape. The open field of the hundred acre farm held only broken stems of the recent reaping. The empty house and barn in the distance offered no source of encouragement. For just a moment common sense overrode his terror and he attempted to stand.

    Enough, I hissed.

He recoiled, his body shaking with the effort to push away.

I couldn’t help but smile at his feeble attempts to flee. You took my precious child, a child I nurtured and loved. A child I spent years guiding. You took that happy, intelligent, strong woman and twisted her into a sniveling pile of mush. I spent her entire life building her up, telling her how wonderful she was. I showed her the difference between right and wrong. The eighteen years it took to create self-esteem and give her a sense of her worth, you destroyed with one blink of your evil eyes.

Slowly squeezing my hand into a fist in front of his face, I smiled as Brad’s naturally pale face turned pink. The whites of his blue eyes erupted into a bright red as the vessels within burst. He sputtered, but no words would come. Mouth ajar, his failed attempt to gasp for air almost made me chuckle.

You know what pisses me off the most? You don’t even know how evil you are. You’ve torn her down to nothing. She’s incapable of any critical thinking at this point. Not even a sense of self preservation is left within her.

Scrutinizing every facial muscle, I watched for some telltale sign of acceptance as I spoke. True remorse was what I craved. Once I was certain he’d attained enlightenment, the pain would end.

His aura and body pulsated with fear, but nothing more.

"I watch her cry. Every second of every day tears threaten to overwhelm her. Her pain is so great at times she struggles to breathe. I watch each breath catch in her chest and see the look in her eyes. Knowing that with nearly every breath she wishes her heart would
