About this ebook

Caroline is the key to fulfilling a prophecy. Her marriage to Prince Sloane is the final seal on his destiny to unite countries and lead an empire. He declares war on a rival vampire clan, but before he leaves he makes one request of Caroline. That she take her childhood sweetheart, Lord Luke Stone, as a Second.

A Second is man who binds himself to a woman with the promise to protect her at all costs and acts as a surrogate husband. To appease Sloane, Luke and Caroline agree. After he leaves, the royals of Bernehart are sent away for their own protection. While in exile, Luke and Caroline find themselves drawn to each other once more. They not only have their desires to contend with, but also danger from their enemies. And the big question is, what will happen to their relationship when Sloane returns?

Be Warned: menage sex, anal sex.

    Chapter One

Princess Caroline Vaughan couldn’t wrap her head around recent events. The day had started out well enough: she had woken up next to her handsome husband, Prince Sloane Vaughan. Sloane had enveloped her in an all-consuming hug that had turned into a marathon lovemaking session. The two had then joined Caroline’s sister, Lady Sophie Haley and her sister’s betrothed, Lord Matthew Chase, for a breakfast of fresh boar’s blood. As vampires who chose not to partake in human blood, their choices of meals were fairly limited. However, Caroline was developing quite the taste for the thick, viscous liquid, and she found herself not missing solid food in the least.

Princess Emma, Caroline’s sister-in-law, had also joined them and was quiet, as usual. Even after weeks of living in the Vaughan Palace, Caroline had not yet been able to crack Emma’s stone-cold outer façade. Several times, she had invited the vampire princess to accompany her and Sophie to various social functions, but Emma had declined each time. Sloane couldn’t explain his sister’s behavior very well and just cited their childhood as the reason for Emma’s guarded personality. He hadn’t been able to describe their childhood yet either, but Caroline guessed that it had something to do with their deceased mother.

The five had been sitting in the informal parlor, sipping at their breakfast, when Lord Stone, Caroline’s former beau and Bernehart’s current head knight, came bursting into the room. His normally well-groomed blond hair was sticking out in every direction and he was breathless, which was odd for such a virile man. Luke had to bend his knees and heave several giant breaths before he could speak.

Your Highness, Lord Gardyner just wandered onto the grounds from the woods.

Everyone in the room snapped their heads in Sloane’s direction, their faces registering the same shock and surprise as his. Royals and citizens of Bernehart alike had presumed dead the men who went on the trail of the Scarclyfs after the kidnapping and subsequent rescue of Caroline and Sophie weeks ago, assuming they’d been killed at the hands of Mathias or one of his allies.

My God, cried Sloane, standing up after his initial shock, Where is he? Is he hurt?

Luke stood up straight, one hand on his still-heaving rib cage, and said,

I had the stable boys carry him to the kitchen house, as it was the closest. I don’t think he’s going to die, but he’s been tortured from the looks of it. He passed out before he could say much, but it seems like he’s the only one who made it.

Obviously not comprehending what he meant, Princess Emma asked, He’s the only one who made it to Bernehart? What of the rest?

Luke shook his head. Your Highness, they are long dead.

Emma stood up from the table and, without excusing herself, pushed past Luke and left the room. Sloane shot Caroline a reassuring look and said,

Ladies, if you wouldn’t mind, I think Chase and I should get out there at once. If you will excuse us.

With that, Sloane, Matthew, and Luke disappeared to the kitchen, leaving Caroline and Sophie alone. Sophie set down the goblet she had been clenching in her hand and said,

Well, I suppose the cloud of denial we’ve been living in for weeks has lifted.

Sophie was right, of course. This was an instant reminder that she wasn’t just a new bride. She was the Chosen, and stood as the symbol of the Prophecy. With a heavy heart, Caroline watched her sister rub the arm that had been broken during her beating at the Scarclyf castle. It had healed in only a few hours, thanks to her being changed to a vampire by Lord Chase, but she’d told Caroline that it still hurt at times. A phantom pain, as it were.

I suppose so. Caroline agreed, It’s been nice pretending that I’m merely a newlywed, and just occupying myself with planning your wedding.

Sophie and Lord Matthew Chase had grown close over the past weeks, building on the bond that had begun when he chose to suck her blood to save her from dying. Caroline had been thrilled, mainly because she liked Matthew, but partly because it meant that her twin wouldn’t return to Scollfyld to be married off to whomever their father chose there. Of course, Duke Talbot Haley of Wallaceshire had not been easy to convince. Having grand plans of marrying Sophie off to a high-titled man, he had only become agreeable after King Edmund––Sloane’s father––had hinted of a title being bestowed upon Lord Chase in the near future. Their wedding was just over a month away now.

Sighing, Caroline said, "I should try to
