About this ebook

One sunny (or was it cloudy?) day, I noticed that in my inner thoughts, fish idioms and proverbs appeared quite frequently. In addition, in some of the books that I have written, fish sayings would pop up occasionally from the pages. Collections of quotations are among my favorite reading materials.

While most books of this kind are ‘sweet and cute’, this one is ‘spicy and cool,’ appealing also to more sophisticated readers. The book will attract those interested in proverbs, folklore, self-improvement and of course, lovers of fish and fishing.

    WHY FISH?

So you find yourself with a book of fish proverbs. What an odd fish! Why proverbs? How come fish? I’ll try to explain, although things will get clearer as you splash around in the waters of the following pages. If there are fish, there has to be water, and of course fishermen are part of the story too. Not only quotations about fish will be found here, but also mythology, astrology, dreams, and fairy tales about fish.

One plus one makes three: you have here the result of combining two hobbies.

Yet a fish is a fish is a fish (in the spirit of Gertrude Stein’s memorable saying a rose is a rose is a rose). Namely, a fish is not only a proverb, but also something that swims in the sea, and unfortunately (for the fish, that is) something that can be served on a plate. While diving or snorkeling, one discovers a different world: A world of quietness and depth, a realm of color and grace. Time stands still and the world is left behind. I was once sitting in a dentist’s chair in a fancy office. A huge aquarium was near me. I watched, almost hypnotized, while the fish danced and the dentist drilled.

Fish are an important source of food for humankind, and are considered to be an
