About this ebook

A unique and exciting new Astrology System based on a blend of Celtic Tree knowledge, ancient wisdom and modern astrology.

Celtic Tree and Animal Spirit Astrology is a completely new and carefully devised system of astrology linking many aspects of Celtic myth and symbolism into the modern-day zodiac.

The Celts saw trees as a link with the supernatural world. Trees provided a connection to the world of spirits and ancestors through doorways into other worlds.

Celtic tree astrology is the astrology system believed to be practised by the ancient Irish, based on natural symbolism: the tree. There are a number of versions of Tree Astrology, many centred on the cycles of the moon with the year divided into the 13 lunar months established by the Druid religion.

The system used in this book draws specifically on the trees of the Ogham (the Celtic Alphabet and core behind the concept of Celtic Tree Astrology) known to be native in Ireland in Celtic times. Symbols and deities drawn from Celtic myths, festivals and documents have been linked with symbols, associations and attributes of the modern-day zodiac to offer insight into psychology, spirituality and life path depending on the reader’s Celtic Tree.

As well as delving deeper into the meaning of each tree, this book weaves Celtic festivals and known associations of animals through Celtic and other cultures into the Celtic Tree System and modern astrology practices combining the author’s knowledge of astrology, psychology and symbolism to take the reader on one of the most wondrous of all journeys: the journey of self-discovery.

Celtic Tree and Animal Spirit Astrology - Carole Somerville

    The Celtic Tree Alphabet

According to the Book of Balymote, the Druids passed their secrets and rituals down orally and had an apparent taboo against committing their knowledge to writing. The Celtic alphabet known as the Ogham is said to have been invented by Ogma Sun-Face. It comprises three sets of five consonants and one set of five vowels; there are many other versions of Ogham each with unique names and notches.

Written around 1391 in Sligo, the Book of Ballymote includes important literary and cultural items as well as the key to the Ogham alphabet, confirming that Ogham was a secret, ritualistic language.

Two similar lists of Tree Alphabets are listed, one of which being:

    B – Beithe – Birch

    L – Luis – Rowan

    F – Fearn – Alder

    S – Saille, Sail – Willow

    N – Nuin, Nion – Ash

    H – Huathe, Huath – Hawthorn

    D – Duir – Oak

    T – Tinne – Holly

    C – Coll – Hazel

    Q – Quert, Queirt – Apple

    M – Muin – Vine

    G – Gort – Ivy

Ng – Ngetal – Reed, Broom

    Ss,St - Straif, Sraibh  – Blackthorn

    R – Ruis – Elder

    A – Alim, Ailm – Silver Fir

    O – Ohn, Onn – Furze

    U – Ur – Heather

    E – Eadha – White Poplar

    I – Ioho,  Ido – Yew

    EA – Ebhadh – Aspen

    OI – Oir - Ivy

    UI,PE – Uilleand – Honeysuckle

    IO – Iphin – Gooseberry

    CH – Koad – Grove

Researchers have been inspired to develop Tree Astrology systems based on these alphabets, as is believed would have been practised in Celtic times.

The Celtic Lunar Calendar and Trees

It is believed that the Celts used a Lunar Calendar of 13 months, each of 28 days. Every month of the Celtic Lunar calendar bears the name of a tree which signifies particular qualities of the moon during that lunar cycle. These also stand for one of the consonants in the Celtic Alphabet. The five vowels have tree names corresponding to the nights of the solstices and equinoxes.

There are many variations of the Ogham (Celtic Alphabet) including the Beth-Luis-Nion beginning at the winter solstice and going from new moon to new moon and the Beth-Luis-Fearn beginning at Samhain, going from full moon to full moon.

There are many different associations and symbolic links with trees including colours, birds and lakes. The following is the Beth-Luis-Nion interpretation of the dates for the months of the year corresponding to the consonants:

    B - Beithe, the Birch Month (December 24th - January 20th)

    L - Luis, the Rowan Month (January 21st - February 17th)

    N - Nion, the Ash month (February 18th - March 17th)

    F - Fearn, the Alder Month (March 18th - April 14th)

    S - Saille, the Willow Month (April 15th - May 12th)

    H - Huath, the Hawthorn Month (May 13th - June 9th)

    D - Duir, the Oak Month (Jun 10th - July 7th)

    T - Tinne, the Holly Month (July 8th - August 4th)

    C - Coll, the Hazel Month (August 5th - September 1st)

    M - Muin, the Vine Month (September 2nd - September 29th)

    G - Gort, the Ivy Month (September 30th - October 27th

Ng - Ngetal, the Reed Month (October 28th - November 24th)

    R - Ruis, the Elder Month (November 25th - December 23rd)

This is just one of several interpretations. There is much argument and diverse views on exact dates and some debate too on what the Ogham actually represents. Some for instance will include the Beech tree in the alphabet but it is possible the Beech was not introduced into Ireland until later centuries.

According to ancient myths, the Celtic Tree Alphabet was used to make secret coded messages to be understood only by a trained few (the Druids).  In recent times new divination systems have been devised using the Ogham as people believe the Druids would have practised.

Celtic Tree Calendar and Traditional Zodiac Signs

Before beginning an interpretation of individual trees and their astrological equivalents with spirit animals, it is necessary to link the Celtic Tree calendar to traditional zodiac signs. Previous interpretations of the Celtic Tree Zodiac have been based on the 13 cycles of the Celtic lunar calendar. Others have split Sun Signs into three (with no real clarification of how dates have been chosen) before attributing trees to each division including those that are not native to Ireland and have no apparent links with the Ogham.

The Celtic Tree Astrological Calendar referred to in this book subdivides each Sun Sign into periods of approximately ten days according to the established decanates of each zodiac sign. Planetary influences and other associations ascribed to each decan have been matched with the Celtic Tree alphabet and spiritual/mythical history of the Trees through a process of observable correlation and intuitive response. For this reason, this system will be like no Celtic Tree Zodiac seen
