About this ebook

Sasperilda is a classic bedtime or any-time story for children of all ages published more than thirty years after the author, Michael Lynch's death. His daughters, author K.M. Daughters, for whom he wrote the story, proudly share his legacy with you.

Young readers will delight in the wickedly funny, and forgetful witch, Sasperilda; her unusual sisters, Hilda and Matilda; and their clever cat, George. Sasperilda matches wits with the powerful Great Genie and the ruler of the kingdom of Blarney, King Dennis, while hilariously mixing up the words in her magic spells and brewing up mysterious, exploding brews in her cauldron. Who would believe that the fearsome Sasperilda might help humanity?

Michael Lynch was our father. He died before we were grown.

This story was his third, written for us when we were quite

small. We're adults now, and yet we love it more and more.

We dedicate this book to his memory, to Mom's memory, for she

diligently typed all his manuscripts, and to all the children,

big and small, who wisely believe in magic.

    About The Author

    Chapter One

    HILDA, MATILDA AND SASPERILDA

Many, many years ago in the faraway Kingdom of Blarney, there lived a very powerful and wicked witch. Her name was Sasperilda, Grandpa Reilly told his little granddaughter, Nancy. Her home was hidden deep within the Drowsy Forest.

Grandpa, Nancy interrupted. I’m afraid of witches. They scare me.

    This one won’t, Grandpa promised.

Is she mean like all the other bad witches Daddy told me about? Nancy asked.

    Meaner, Grandpa replied.

Then I don’t think I like her, Grandpa. Please tell me a different story.

Give my wicked old witch a chance, Grandpa bargained. After I tell you about her for a while, if you want a new story, I’ll tell you one, Darling.

    Is she scary, Grandpa?

She would scare you out of a year’s growth, the minute you looked at her, Nancy.

But she likes little girls and boys? Nancy asked hopefully.

Sasperilda hates children most of all, her Grandpa told her.

She is a bad, bad lady, Nancy declared, holding tighter to Grandpa’s hand.

She is the worst female you could ever meet, Grandpa agreed. But I still think you will like her when you hear her story. And this story of mine is not just about one witch, but three of them.

Grandpa Reilly made himself comfortable on Nancy’s bed. He leaned back against the headboard and raised his arm up inviting Nancy to draw close.

She scooted back to rest in the crook of his arm and looked up at her Grandpa expectantly.

Hilda was the tallest, thinnest and oldest of the three witches, Grandpa began. "She was seven feet tall, nine inches wide and four thousand nine hundred and sixty-three years old. There were so many candles on her
