The Starting Line
Going Out on Your Own
Here’s a paradoxical side effect of challenging economic times: Lots of people who lose their jobs decide to start their own business. This is especially true of baby boomers.
According to the federal government’s Small Business Administration (SBA), over five million people age 55 or older are self-employed or own their own small business. The SBA reports that, from 2000 to 2007, there was a 52 percent increase in the number of self-employed 55- to 64-year olds.
Whether you’re a boomer who is starting a new venture on your own, or someone younger who realizes you have the unquenchable desire to be your own boss, this eGuide will be of value. It’s designed to give you the basic information you need to start, grow, and manage a 1-person business.
How can I be so sure this eGuide will help you? One of the primary reasons is that I based it on my own experience. You see, I started a 1-person business successfully not once, but twice.
The first time, I left a very good job to start my own direct marketing business. I ran it as a 1-person business for a while, but then I got so many clients I couldn’t handle them alone anymore, so I took on a partner and we started hiring people. (Later, I bought my partner out, so I ended up owning the business by myself again, but that’s a different story.) The business I started as a 1-person copywriting service grew into a regional direct marketing agency with over 50 employees and $5 million of annual income. That agency provided me with an excellent living for twenty years.
When my agency was folded into a much larger ad agency, I stayed for a period of time but then decided I wanted to get out of the agency business altogether. That’s when I started another successful 1-person business, this time as a freelance writer, self-published author, and marketing consultant. The eBook you are reading now is part of a series of 123 eGuides
that I publish independently.
I learned a lot along the way, not the least of which was what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. That’s what you’ll find in this eGuide.
Before You Go Out on Your Own, Be Sure You Have the Right Stuff
When I left my job and started my first business, I had about ten years of experience in my field. Some people probably thought I was crazy to leave a good paying job with benefits at an established company and start my own business. In fact, going out on my own directly contributed to the dissolution of my first marriage. But honestly, even that didn’t stop me. I had a burning desire to be my own boss and it
