A child of the movies, I was always consumed by fantastic stories told by others and translated into adventures to be retold by me through the action figure medium. As I grew older, I put the action figures away and moved into the realm of role playing. Though I never outgrew role playing, I certainly don't have the time for it anymore. Since I was eleven years old, I've been pouring almost every ounce of creative energy I have into writing.I graduated college in 1993 with a degree in computer science. I tried my hand at programming for a couple of years and found it pretty unsatisfying. I later became a partner at a comic book store, where I spent several years. Though it wasn't a financial success, the experience I gained from running the store and the people that I met (many of whom I'm still in touch with today) was priceless. After leaving the store, I settled into a career of teaching. I still teach at a public high school in New York. Ironically, I've picked up computer programming again, which is what I mostly teach.I've been writing the whole time.I released my first book electronically in 2010. Forty Leap was a turning point for me in both style and story building. The Book of Revelations, which was written earlier but released later, was sort of a midway point between the writer I was and the writer I've become. I experimented with a very odd style and a story that employed diverse characters and controversial situations. In September 2010, I released the first installment of Zombies! Zombies! has been a tremendous success for me that came very close to being made into a television series. Since Zombies!, I have written a five part miniseries called Castes and have been working on developing tabletops games, the first of which, ApocalypZe, was published in early 2014.Now, 6 years later, a 3rd Zombies! series is due to be released in September of 2016.

    What has come before…

With the cure to the zombie plague at their fingertips, Denise Luco and her colleagues lost control of the treatment and their primary patient, Number Six, died. The consequences of this loss had yet to be felt but would be dire indeed.

Amber Sunsweet, denied her salvation, returned to her home in Queens where she found her mother willing to accept her however she was. But the world would see her at the end of a rope with a bullet in her head. The world would just as soon burn her at the stake. And so she did the only thing she could think to do. She released the zombies in the subway, hoping to hasten the fall of New York.

The Arrick brothers have been reunited. John Arrick, though, is determined to find Dillon Waters and rescue him from the zombie hunter, Francis Culph. In an effort to do so, he and Malcolm have made a deal with Albert Chatham whereby he will lead them to the zombie hunter in exchange for the ability to conduct experiments on John Arrick.

    It was 4:03 am.

    The telephone was ringing.

Exhausted, Naughton rolled over in his bed and tried to home in on the sound. Where was his phone? He usually kept it in his pants pocket but he was in bed and sleeping so he wasn’t wearing pants with pockets.

Through his haze, he hadn’t counted the rings and was startled when they suddenly stopped. He either hadn’t been quick enough for the person on the other end of the phone or his voicemail had been quicker. Too bad. The phone call could have signaled any number of emergencies. In his line of work, terrible things seemed to happen on an hourly basis. But the previous day had brought enough terrible things. He just didn’t feel like hearing about any others.

    He went back to sleep.

    It was 4:06 am.

    The telephone started ringing again.

Naughton decided that he was going to change his ring tone.

Now angry, he threw the covers aside and stormed out of bed. His pants were thrown over a chair and the vibrating and ringing phone in the pocket was making them do a tiny dance. Grabbing hold of them, he pulled the phone out, quite ready to let whoever was on the other end of the phone have a piece of his outrage. He didn’t care if it was Tate or the Commissioner or the Mayor himself.

    It was Denise.

    Dammit!

For the briefest of instants, he thought about not answering the phone. With all that had been happening, he had managed to put her effectively out of his mind. Their email exchanges were all business and that suited him. A call at this time of the morning did not bode well.

    He answered it.

    She said his name.

    She’d been crying.

He asked what the matter was…

…and she began to tell him.

Right away, he understood that the death of Ashley Lassiter had reminded her of Zoe. Right away, he understood why she had called him. There was no one else who could relate to her on that issue. It was a trauma that she and Naughton had shared together, though it had affected them very differently.

There’s more, she said. I heard there’s trouble in New York.

Nothing we haven’t seen before, he told her, though that wasn’t entirely true.

That’s not what the President thinks.

Denise, please, Naughton said. I fight the quarantine battle three times a week. They’re never going to shut down the city.

    They’re shutting it down today.

Naughton went silent. At some point, he’d sat himself down in the chair that had been previously occupied by his pants. Now he was glad of it. He needed to be sitting as he considered the weight of what she was saying. In Atlanta, Denise had a direct line to Ralph Kraemer. Kraemer had a direct line to the President. Had a decision been made? Was it possible that Naughton had fallen victim to a smokescreen?

How do you know? he asked.

I’m not supposed to know, she said. One of the senior doctors came to tell me. Ashley was the city’s last hope. For as long as she was improving, mapping out a cure, the President was willing to keep New York open.

    Jesus Christ.

They may already be mobilized for the quarantine, Lance. If they’re not then it won’t be too long. An hour or two.

I’ll make a call, he said. I’ll stop it.

You can’t stop it, she told him. Damn it, Lance, it’s already done.

He gritted his teeth. Then what am I supposed to do, Denise? Why did you even call me?

    You have to leave.

    What?

You can probably still get through the tunnel into Jersey. Go now, before they seal everything off.

Naughton dropped his head into his hand. Come on, Denise. I can’t do that. Where would I even go?

Come here, she said without hesitation.

It was tempting. With New York quarantined, Naughton would be out of work if not, well, dead. The idea of getting in the car and driving down to Atlanta was very appealing. He could probably be there before midnight. He envisioned himself showing up at Denise’s apartment and taking her in his arms. He could already feel the curve of her back and smell the fragrance of her hair. The idea was so appealing…

    I can’t, he whispered.

    My God, Lance, why not?

Maybe, he said. Maybe when this is all over, I’ll take a vacation. I’ll come and see you.

A vacation! Are you stupid? Lance, you’re going to die.

He laughed, composing himself. Don’t be silly, Denise. It’s not like we’re overrun. I’m a police captain. I’ll do my job and then cross the border as a VIP.

On the other side of the line, he heard her breathing. She may have started to say something. Maybe she was going to tell him that she loved him. Maybe that would have been just enough to convince him to go. But she either decided against it or just couldn’t get the words out.

I’ve got to go, Denise, he said. I’ve got a busy day ahead of me.

    Fine, she choked.

He wanted to tell her he loved her, but couldn’t find the courage. Instead, he thanked her for the call and hung up the phone. He sat staring at it for a long time. Too long, in fact. Finally, he opened up the dialing keypad and punched in a number. A sleepy woman’s voice answered.

    Hello?

    Alicia, hi, it’s Lance Naughton.

Lance? What? Do you know what time it is?

I’m sorry, but this is important. I’m sorry I didn’t get in touch with you when Anthony passed…

He told me, she said. You were away.

Yeah, he answered. Something like that.

It’s four o’clock in the morning, Lance.

Right, he said. Right. I didn’t call about that anyway. Do you have somewhere you can go? He could sense the change in her demeanor as he said it. You need to take Mellie and leave the city right away.

    What? Like now?

Right now. Throw a few things into a bag and go.

    Is it that bad?

    It will be.

    Okay, Lance. Thanks.

    Goodbye, Alicia.

    Goodbye, Lance.

For a few moments, he sat tapping his thumb on the phone. He wanted to take a shower before starting his awful day. But before that, he had time for one more phone call. With bleak things on the horizon, he placed a call to Eileen Stemmy.

When Naughton arrived at work, it was still early. Most of the night shift was still on duty. He checked his email and he checked the news wire. There were still a lot of stories coming in about the events of the day before. Amber Sunsweet was big news. But nothing said anything about an impending quarantine. Maybe Denise was wrong. After all, would the President really shut down the city without warning its eight million inhabitants? It was crazy. This was the United States of America.

Ten minutes later, he heard a rumbling. Looking out the window, he saw two military Hummers and a tank heading down Broadway toward the Battery Tunnel.

    Bad news.

He got on the phone with Lopez right away and ordered him to the New Jersey offices of ZCF Incorporated. Normally when a detective loses a partner, he or she gets some time off. As far as Naughton was concerned, this was going to be Lopez’s extended vacation. He could probably still use his badge to get himself out of the city. Even if the investigation itself fizzled out before anything could come of it, he could use it as an excuse to get Lopez out of the city. The detective deserved at least that. Naughton ordered Rollins to accompany him.
