Pursuit of a cure leads John into a direct confrontation with the supernatural and before long John finds himself another pawn in another war.
John enters the fray to win back Harriet, confident in his experience as a veteran. Only this time, the war is a centuries old family feud and he is unable to trust any allies as they each play him to their own advantage. Byron Gordon

Byron Gordon grew up in the rural Eastern Shore of Maryland, USA. One of six children, he soon discovered his love of reading, ranging from the clever humor of P.G. Wodehouse to the epic fantasy of Tolkien to the fast paced science fiction of Timothy Zahn. Fed on this widely varied diet, his imagination blossomed and he began to write, desiring to create worlds and adventures of his own. After realizing the bleak financial prospects of an aspiring writer trying to break into the fiction realm, Byron enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. He spent an extra week in Coast Guard Boot Camp (Cape May, NJ) for writing during the breaks between classes. After Boot Camp he traveled to California for training in radio communications. Following the completion of his training, he spent three years on a Coast Guard Cutter, interdicting and repatriating illegal migrants. He currently is still on active duty and plans search and rescue efforts on the east coast of the USA.Despite the intense, and often hectic, schedule that military life entails, Byron has continued to write in his free time. While writing a complete novel still proves elusive, he has composed multiple short stories and a small amount of poetry. In the spring of 2011, he started publishing his writings electronically and now has a fair number of short stories and poetry available online in a variety of formats.

    Spectre Of War

The snow served both to soften and brighten the world around John Grahmson as he paused in the shadow of a building and glanced across the open field that separated him from the lighthouse. It wasn’t so much that he wasn’t supposed to be there, but if there were any Navy personnel around they would be sure to pick him up. While they didn’t particularly care about people trespassing out on the old lighthouse, they discouraged the practice, as much out of principle as anything else. After all, the war was over and the lighthouse was decommissioned.

Still, John checked and waited impatiently for a five count before he started across the field. If he was caught he would miss his rendezvous. It was the first chance he’d had in two years to spend quality time with Harriet. Two long years of grime and blood and this moment had been the shining light that brought him through, there was no way he was missing it now. Especially since he was hoping she would not be Harriet Rowe for much longer.

The field was empty and still, the only disturbance to the night was the crystalline song of the wind drifting across the snow. John limped, his knee stiff from the cold, across the field towards the waiting lighthouse. He smiled when his eye caught movement in the window. Harriet.

The steps up to the door were iced over and John slowed his gait as he climbed them. He reached for the door but stopped when he heard voices. The one was definitely Harriet, he’d know the memory of her voice anywhere, it had lulled him to sleep every night he’d been gone. However, the other was foreign and male. French, if John’s time in Europe had taught him anything.

John strained to hear what they were saying, but he couldn’t make out anything beyond the murmur of their voices. The chill wind that swept in from across the bay and around the corner of the house cut through to his soul. He opened the door and slipped inside, shutting the cold breeze out behind him.

The voices became clearer, sounding through the thin interior wall of the next room over. The words still didn’t register; he could only hear the light, teasing tone that pulsed through them. He’d heard the tone a thousand times in the past two years, pretty much every time a Frenchman spoke to a good looking broad.

John pushed away the instinct to prowl forward and spy on them. Even if she was meeting someone else, Harriet deserved better than that, she deserved a chance to explain. He dusted the snow from the mantle of his jacket, braced his cuffs, and found his voice.

    Harriet?

John! Harriet dashed around the corner and into his
