Introduction
With each step, Joseph’s feet bring him closer to freedom. He has been walking all night, and he is tired, but he dare not stop. He is sure that there are people looking for him; people who are walking with dogs, and with guns. He looks up to the night sky and sees that it is beautiful and full of stars. However, tonight, he is only focused on one star in particular. He remembers the song they taught him:
When the Sun comes back
And the first quail calls
Follow the Drinking Gourd,
For the old man is a-waiting for to carry you to freedom
If you follow the Drinking Gourd
The riverbank makes a very good road.
The dead trees will show you the way.
Left foot, peg foot, travelling on,
Follow the Drinking Gourd
Tonight, Joseph is following the Drinking Gourd. He knows that the Drinking Gourd is really code for the constellation of stars known as the Big Dipper. One star in this constellation, Polaris (also known as the North Star) will help Joseph to find his way to freedom. He is traveling from the Southern United States all the way up to the North, where friendly white people will help him.
Joseph is a slave. He is running away to freedom on the Underground Railroad.
