    Chapter 1 What pizza?

Keah stood at the window watching, as wisps of cloud danced around the waning moon.

Bang, bang, bang! The knock on the front door made her jump as she woke from her trance.

    Who is it? She shouted.

Pizza the voice from the other side of the door shouted back.

I didn’t order any pizza. Keah replied.

She picked a stool up and placed it at the door and then stepped onto it, pushing her eye up to the spy hole. Her dad assumed everyone was going to grow to six foot when he had the spy hole fitted, but Keah was struggling to reach five foot two, a stool was the only option. A boy about her age, sixteen, stood awkwardly holding about 6 pizza boxes.

Some-one at this address did Miss. Someone has to pay for all these pizzas. My boss is gonna be livid with you if I have to take them back.

I didn’t order any pizzas. Go away. I’m calling the police. Keah replied as she stepped away from the door.

Then she heard that noise again. It grated through every bone in her body. It was the noise that made her spine tingle. Fingernails running down a blackboard. It was two pieces of metal scrapping together. She shuddered and took a deep breath.

Looking back through the spy hole she watched the boy look around quickly then turn and head back down the hall way shaking his head. She heard him mumbling and cursing very loudly to himself as he shoved the boxes back into the pizza warmers. His boss was going to be so miffed. Keah wanted to open the door and shout for him to come back.

She didn’t. He stopped and turned as if to speak to someone but Keah couldn’t quite see who. She wanted to scream out after him.

‘Don’t talk to anyone in the hall way.’ but she couldn’t.

She watched as the boy fell to the floor silently. Dark shadows moved along the hallway around the hallway. But she couldn’t quite see who or what it was. Keah desperately wanted to run over to the unconscious boy and help. But instead she stepped of the stool and slid down the door onto the floor.

    Bang, bang, bang!

The banging and vibrations on the door woke her with a jump. The light was now streaming in through the window and the traffic was noisy. She felt the door vibrate against her back as the policeman knocked again. Keah crawled into her bedroom, crouched at the side of her bed and listened. She heard him walk away and bang on her neighbour Mrs Joys door. She must have fallen asleep by the door. Taking a deep breath and wiping a tear off her face she showered and got ready for school.

Hesitating slightly before she opened the front door. She went to step out. A tall policeman stepped in front of her.

Oh she announced acting quite startled. What’s going on?

Morning Miss. Do you live in this apartment? The policeman asked with a deep voice. Keah stepped back. She turned and glanced at the door before nodding dumbly.

She couldn’t see a body lying around anywhere and figured they must have taken it away already.

Why didn’t you answer your door when I knocked earlier? The policeman leered at Keah and made her stomach do a somersault.

Got ID? Keah asked, avoiding eye contact.

The policeman pulled out a wallet and
