About this ebook
This short story tells the tale of Michael Compton, a Northerner, and Danielle Boyette, a Deep South gal, who he meets by chance. They have more in common than their five senses show them.
Home is not a place so much as a feeling—an intimacy shared, uniform acceptance, eternal belonging—even if you’ve never been there before.

CHAPTER 1
Home is not a place so much as a feeling—an intimacy shared, uniform acceptance, eternal belonging—even if you’ve never been there before.
Michael Compton, a northern transplant intent on ridding the world of drug dealers, had adapted well to the Deep South. His accent set him apart, but his core love of people usually garnered him forgiveness of that small misstep in his genealogical roots.
This particular Monday he was ninety miles away from his New Orleans base.
He again circled the rectangular table capable of seating twenty, losing track of how many times this made. He thanked God he suffered no acrophobia. This corner room constructed with glass windows instead of two walls offered a view from ten stories up.
His camera crew needed no supervision. He nodded in agreement with that musing, then checked his watch. Thirty minutes ‘til taping. Louisiana loved a good cup of coffee and so did he. Slipping out unnoticed, he took the elevator and exited the Capitol Building, glad to be outside. Even in the humid heat of Baton Rouge.
Free now, he walked the block and settled in a café.
He sensed her before he saw or heard her. No, that wasn’t exactly true. He experienced a pause in time, like one big inhalation, or one collective quiet gasp
