About this ebook

But, in the recent years it has been noticed that a very large majority of the students, without reading the original texts, rely on the guide books or notes prepared by their teachers or others. This is definitely not a healthy habit because students do pass their exams with the help of such notes; they miss so many things which haunt them in their later lives.

I would strongly advise all the students to read the original text once again even if you have already read it, after reading this short treatise. You will see that the same story, after reading this treatise, will begin to give many new meanings to you.

All the best.

There is no doubt that Henrik Ibsen is considered as one of the most influential dramatist during the period of artistic renaissance which took place in Norway towards the last decade of the 19th century. Henrik Ibsen’s plays were highly acclaimed in the academic and social circles all over the world. Ibsen was born in 1828 in Norway and he passed away in 1906.

Since Ibsen was born in a poor family, there were hardships during his childhood. In the mature period of his studies, he studied medicine for some time but he decided to write plays and abandoned his studies.

Ibsen’s first play The Vikings at Helgeland was published in 1958. In the same year he decided to marry his beloved Susannah Thoresen. She was the daughter of a pastor.

His exceptional talent in writing plays won him a scholarship to Italy. It was in Italy where he wrote his memorable plays which established Ibsen in the circle of drama writers. In Italy he wrote long, historical verse plays and they were highly appreciated both by audiences and critics.

Having left Norway, Ibsen spent most of his life in Italy and Germany.

In the year 1869, Ibsen started writing prose plays. He left poetry writing and took up realism seriously. In the following years he mainly concentrated on the society, its people, their relations, and the problems prevailing in the society. In 1877 he started writing a series of five plays: The Pillars of Society, A Doll’s House, Ghosts, An Enemy of the People, and The Wild Duck. These plays very precisely and analytically examine the shortcomings of the modern society. Among these five plays, A Doll’s House won the hearts of the millions of readers and theatre audiences. Even today A Doll’s House retains the power to attract the audiences, for the social problems highlighted in the play are the same. It is named, in
