About this ebook

After the rain stopped Jean stepped out into the early morning feeling as if she had not slept for a week. Looking over her shoulder Jean waited for the next impact to come from whatever had been chasing them. The clouds were starting to clear and the air had a freshness about it that promised a clear day to follow.

The rundown old building had seen better days but it had been left to crumble on its own. The roof was missing in some places, there were no doors left and rubble was scatted all over the place. It looked like someone had been living there not too long ago with the remains of a fire pit in the middle of the room and empty cans of food left lying around. There were floor boards missing and in places you could see through to the ground underneath. It also looked as though someone had been sleeping on the dirty old mattress without anything for warmth.

    Chapter 1

Jean, Bunda and Jenny walked out of the building, holding hands and looking around the street, which was still empty, just as the sun was rising over the horizon. Walking with caution because they could see dark shadows and hear sounds that were now familiar and making them nervous.

The three walked down the street looking for anything that would harm them and a place to hide, if need be, while keeping to the left side of the street. When a stray cat jumped out in front of them which startled them they all leapt and with their hearts beating so fast, Jean thought hers would beat right out of her chest when both children bumped into her. Jean picked up Jenny to carry her giving them both comfort as Jenny put her head on Jeans shoulder, Bunda held onto Jeans ripped shirt and as he looked down at his own torn and dirty clothes, he was looking forward to having a shower when he could.

As the sun got brighter and people were starting to come out into the street Jean tried not to look so sad but to look as though she was out walking with her children and not wanting to drawing attention to them. Walking with purpose, Jean held her back straight and her head high ignoring the stares of people in the street, just wanting to get away to a safe place for the children.

When they walked around a corner Jean stopped, not knowing where to go, said What do you think Bunda? Bunda looked up at her with sad eyes saying I think we should keep going while Jenny is asleep, do you want me to carry her for a while? Jean smiled down at this young boy with love knowing that he was way too young to go through a life of running from something that was not his fault or his sisters No it’s ok, I can carry her for a while longer, thanks for asking.

They walked for an hour before coming upon a street vendor selling hot food. The smell woke Jenny up and she started to cry because she was hungry, the vendor took pity on them and gave them some food while Jean and Bunda said thank you a number of times the man told them If you don’t stop I will have to charge you for the food and with a smile he gave them more hotdogs to take with them, then he left to go in the other direction. After they had finished eating and resting Jean said in a tied voice Come on we need to keep moving.

As they got up to go Jean heard someone call her name, she turned and saw a tall man walking towards them, her instinct told her to run so she picked up Jenny and said to Bunda in a whisper RUN and run they did. Jean carried Jenny with ease, her small body bouncing up and down making her laugh but Jean didn’t think it was funny at all. They ran down an alleyway and when Jean saw a large bin, they slipped behind it to stop and catch their breath looking back to see if they were being followed. Jean didn’t want to take any chances, she opened the bin and they climbed in, it smelt so bad but it was better than being caught. Jean whispered We’ll stay here for a minute don’t make a sound ok? Putting her finger to her lips she listened for any noise that indicated someone was outside.

    Chapter 2

John and Sam were walking through an alley on their way to catch a space carrier to the planet of their birth when they heard a noise coming from the bin, John opened the lid of a large waste bin to see all three covered in rubbish What are you doing in there? he asked in a puzzled voice. "We’re hiding so go away they might see you and find us Jean said in a stern but frightened voice. Sam was taken aback by her tone and said to John If you feel that way, let’s go John, they don’t need our help" But John had been told long ago by a child of no sight that he would meet three people and they would need his help.

So John turns to Sam saying I think that we should help them Sam and with that he reached into the bin and pulled the children out. Jean started to protest but John spoke with authority in his voice Don’t bother to argue about it, you’re getting our help whether you like it or not, now come on let’s get you cleaned up you all look like you could use a meal too.

Jean looked at this stranger who didn’t know them but wanted to help anyway and she was grateful that someone would help. But Jean didn’t trust anyone. She thought that he must be working for those that wanted the children, but then he was gentle when getting them out of the bin. Jean must have looked worse than the children, so what must he be thinking of her letting children hide in a bin. Well! It was for their safety but his actions still confused her. Jean looked at the other man he was shorter by a head. They both had blue eyes John’s was a deep blue whereas Sam’s was a light blue. Both had short sandy colored hair and both were over six feet six inches tall.

John had the strong jaw line with a broad nose that had been broken at a young age and he was clean shaven where Sam had a round face and a beard giving his eyes more depth. Both men had a light tan. You could tell that they were brothers by looking at their eyes and high cheek bones. John didn’t really care what he was dressed in as long as it was clean and Sam always had to have a vest on because it was his favorite piece of clothing.

The sun was high in the sky after getting the children out of the bin and as the day was getting hot Jean could smell them. John said I am John and this is my brother Sam, we were on our way home when we heard crying. Sam and John looked down at the children and seeing how shabby they looked it melted the hard men’s hearts. John led the out of the alleyway and into the street. Sam kept an eye out while he walked with the children.

They walked them to a small hotel so that they could have a shower and get something to eat. Jean asked John "Do you think that
