Chapter One
Abby parked outside Jeffrey’s cabin and looked around for his car. The garage seemed to be locked up, so she went over to peek inside since the house appeared so quiet. It would just be her luck that he would change his mind about coming out to his cabin at the last minute the weekend she’d chosen to surprise him.
Jeffrey hated celebrating his birthday because his parents had died in a plane crash one year coming to visit him when he was in college. He hadn’t celebrated it since. When Abby had jokingly suggested that one day she would dress up as the Mad Hatter and throw him an unbirthday party, he’d seemed very pleased despite his best efforts to hide it. She hoped that meant his feelings for her had been growing and changing the same way hers had for him, but she couldn’t be sure until she found him and saw his reaction. She tried to ignore the butterflies that stirred in her stomach for the tenth time that day.
Standing on an upturned bucket, Abby peered into the garage and saw Jeffrey’s car. He had to be around somewhere, even though no lights were on in the cabin. The sun would set soon, so she hoped he was in fact inside. She walked back to her car, hoping the humidity wouldn’t ruin the cake in the backseat. She glanced at it in passing, but it looked fine.
