Ariel finds that Mike and Rex live under constant tension as they are bullied by homophobic Steve. Once Steve tries to make Ariel cow tail to his need to dominate others, Ariel convinces the others to confront Steve, but in the process must face his own homosexual feelings and work out his own self-acceptance.

      Chapter 1

      Ariel Rivera was anticipating his arrival at the McMurdo Air Station and he could barely contain his excitement, which he felt like his first Christmas Eve, discovering so many wrapped gifts surrounding the blue spruce pine that his father had set up the day before. He felt a strong urge to urinate, which he fought, so as not to miss his first view of the most southern continent. As the jet dropped below the clouds, he got his first look at the ice covered barren Ross Island, where the U.S.A. operated the largest scientific community with an agreement with the New Zealand government. All cargo arriving to the South Pole is shipped through this base, which was only going to be a stopover for Ariel, who was on his way to one of the out stations much farther inland from the port on Ross Island in the McMurdo Sound.

      Ariel knew that there were approximately a thousand residents in the community, but where he was headed there would only be a handful of other scientists and explorers. He was to meet the with his new supervisor and then the following day hitch a ride in the supply helicopter that would transport him first to the Amundsen Scott Station, located at 90 degrees south and zero degrees north and then on to a smaller satellite camp, where he was to live and work.

      When Ariel deplaned, the cold hitting his face and hands shocked him. He moved quickly down the moveable stairs and into the terminal, where a staffer was holding a placard with his last name written on it.

      Hello, I’m Ariel Rivera.

      Welcome to Ross Island. I’m Jones. Let’s find your bags and then I will take you to headquarters. How was your flight?

      Long. Do you mind if I make a pit stop at the men’s room?

      No problem, there is one on the way to baggage claim.

      An hour later, Ariel was admitted into the Director’s office who greeted him coldly, barely looking up from his desk, which was covered with reports and documents.

      "Look Rivera, people come and go here all the time. Many can’t take the isolation for very long, while others become part of the fixtures. The U.S. government has spent a small fortune getting you here, try to stick it out at least the full
