Preface

Homeopathic Principles

The three basic principles of Homeopathy, as expounded by its founder, Samuel Hahnemann, are:

1. Like Cures Like (similimum similibus curentur). A substance which can be shown to produce certain symptoms in a healthy patient will have a curative effect when given to a sick person exhibiting the same symptoms.

2. Single Remedy. The most effective homeopathic treatment is provided by a single remedy which matches the most important symptoms exhibited by the patient.

3. Minimum Dose. The appropriate homeopathic dose is the smallest dose which will produce a corrective effect, based on the preparation of medicines according to the homeopathic procedure known as potentisation.

The science and art of Homeopathy cannot be fully understood from a basis of pure materialism. This is so because of the third principle of homeopathic philosophy, the principle of minimum dose. Hahnemann discovered by careful experiment that progressive reduction in the size of the dose administered actually increased the effectiveness of the treatment. He developed a system of progressive mathematical dilution and succussion which effectively removed any physical trace of the original substance, but yet produced remedies which were demonstrably more powerful in action than their material sources.

This phenomenon can only be explained by adopting a non-materialist approach to the problem. Since none of the material of the medicine remains in the remedy, some non-material factor, derived from the original, must be active. This has been called vibrations, force, dynamis and many other names.

For me personally, the most appropriate explanation of how homeopathic potencies work is derived from the principle of resonance. Familiar to students of sound and music, resonance is the principle whereby a vibratory tone produced by an instrument will cause another instrument of similar construction to vibrate in sympathy. A tuning fork, for example, will resonate with an identical tuning fork when the first is struck.

A corollary of the principle of resonance is that equal and opposite vibrations will cancel each-other out. A modern development of this principle is the set of noise-cancelling earphones. Extraneous sound is reversed in polarity and combined with the original sound, so that each cancels out the other. The intrusion of extraneous noise for the listener is thus either significantly reduced or eliminated.

In the case of homeopathy, the 'tone' of the homeopathic remedy is indicated by the symptoms it can produce in a healthy person. A patient who exhibits similar symptoms may be thought of as being resonant to the tone of the remedy. The remedy is thus able to counteract the basic disturbance in the patient and cancel it out, returning the patient to health.

The 'tone' or vibration of the remedy is inherent in the material substance, and is imparted to the medium (alcohol or water) in the process of potentisation. When the material substance has disappeared after successive dilutions, the vibration remains, and in fact becomes more effective, because purer in quality.

This way of looking at the homeopathic remedy makes it clear why the selection of the correct remedy is absolutely critical to successful treatment. The more closely the symptoms of the remedy match those of the patient, the greater will be the degree of resonance between the two, and the greater the likelihood of a successful outcome.

Introduction

For the homeopath, no part of the treatment process is more important than the selection of the appropriate remedy. If the correct remedy is not chosen, the patient will not experience any perceptible changes in their condition.

For practitioners of conventional medicine - allopaths - this phase of treatment is extremely simple by comparison. Equipped with a reasonable diagnosis, based on current medical practice and convention, the allopath can choose with certainty from a small number of drugs, each of which can be relied upon to produce predictable effects in most cases involving a similar diagnosis.

This is fine, and very convenient, for
