Kingsley Fon, the protagonist, is a scoundrel of low birth. He works against all the odds surrounding his small world until the very end. First, he wins the admiration of the old folks and everybody in his village by being a child of good conduct and hard work. Then gradually, as the flower of the flock, and holding a series of cherished dreams in his heart, he climbs tirelessly up the tree of life and in the end brings joy and honour to his poor parents when he is able to make them smile with his achievements in education. He wanted to achieve three things at all costs: to be a freelance writer, to own a publishing house and to be a happy family man. He works so hard to succeed in life and he is blessed as he moves closer to the his goals....

CHAPTER ONE
Kingsley was a hardworking youngster both in school, at home and in the community. Everybody in To-oy loved and admired the zeal in him. He was very humble, respectful and kind to everyone. In fact, he was always used as a yard stick for measuring the conduct of the other youngsters in the village. He was slender built with nice dark hair, that was always kept low and neat. He was bright, always optimistic about life and calm. He just turned 14.
His father was a teacher in the village community school. He did not have much money but he was always there for king to support his education. Pa Fon was in his forties and was well known in the village as a family man who could keep his family together under any circumstances. He was heavyset but very smart. His wife, ma Buri was every child’s mum. She was a very practical woman, loving, jovial and open handed, she was called mama by every other child in the village and her kitchen was always full in the evening. She was a good farmer and a petit-trader and it was thanks to her that the family kept going with food. She owned a large cassava farm at the outskirts of the village like some of the hardworking village women. When she harvested the Cassava, she’d grate some for garri which part was kept in the house for consumption and the rest sold. The money she made from this kept the family up partially with Papa’s meager pay; they lived a fairly blissful life. Thought they did not have much, Ma Buri’s enterprising nature and hard work made the Fon’s family a happy one, Ma Buri as thirty-five years she got married to Mr. Fon some 16years behind, against her father’s wish. But she was encouraged by her mum and gradually his father loved her husband. Her father’s prejudice towards Mr. Fon ended the very day she gave birth to his grand child-Kingsley. He loved is grand child so much and often spoiled him with pretty gifts. It was obvious God did not bless them with money, but they had something that money could not always but. Happiness glowed in the family and they were arrived and
