The Innocent Ones

The early 1970’s was characterized by respect for tradition and one’s parents. According to the tradition of the Mandy people, it was unthinkable to ignore the orders of a parent or an elderly person. A strong bond existed between parents and children. This provoked the burning desire to protect these children, which sometimes led to grief, hatred and pain in the society. A society characterized by evil thoughts, anxiety and the desire to destroy.
According to the tradition of the people, a child was considered a dependent person, who could not take any sound decision. A child’s age did not matter much when it came to decisions on matters affecting things like marriage.
By the late 1970’s, life had taken a different turn, respect for tradition and decision making on a child’s behalf became a nightmare. This story gives a clue of the 1970’s Mandy society.
The Innocent Ones is the story of a mother who caused her only daughter so much pain in a bid to protect her from what she considered bad families. She practically prevents her daughter from being close to her loved ones with the intention of protecting her. This left her daughter with two illegitimate kids. Musa is a herbalist with two wives, Agi (his first wife) and Nina (his second wife). He is inhumane to the kids. He tends to show them love and care only on rare occasions when he is happy. Agi, Musa’s first wife, is kind to the kids. Her love for the kids is so strong that in the event of a conflict of interest between the kids and her husband, the kids’ interest would take precedent.
Nina, Musa’s second wife is a victim of these new changes. But she is indifferent to these new developments. All she wants is to see peace reign in the family. She observes a distant relationship with the kids as a strategy to please her husband and secure the kids’ freedom from her wicked husband.

    CHAPTER 1

It was a bright morning in the rainy warm month of September in Benade village when Wajuku received information that he had been admitted in the University of Buea to read Journalism and Mass Communication. The news brought a lot of joy to their poor family. To Wajuku, first it reminded him of his late father. Wajuku just wished his father was still alive to assist him enter the university. Tears began to run down his cheek but his poor mom told him, my son I know your heart is fill with grief but I will do everything possible to ensure that you further your studies in the university.

One of Wajuku's cousins who just graduated from the university surrendered her room to Wajuku in the crazy neighborhood call Dirty South. The neighborhood was over crowded with students who were all living independently.

Before Wajuku entered Buea, he had read much about the history of the town and expected to see a vast industrious and commercial town but to his greatest dismay, he saw a small town that was over crowded with students living just the type of life he hated most. Most of the girls dressed half naked and the boys were always with their trousers below their buttocks and some even put on ear rings to school.

Three weeks in the university, Wajuku received a call from one of his former school mate who pleaded to come and live with him in the mean time before looking for his own room. The friend by name Frederick was a scammer. He explained to Wajuku that his aunty had opted to sponsor him on the condition that he stops scamming. He explained to Wajuku that not only had he stopped scamming but has also repented. Frederick's aunt gave him the sum of FCFA70 000 to pay his fees and take care of himself in Buea but the money was not enough for his feeding, fees and transportation given that he had a big luggage comprising of his electronics, wool carpet and other house hold equipment.

Wajuku heartily welcome his friend Frederick to his room in Buea but the two of them had one common problem which was that they loved arguing a lot. Whenever they started arguing, neighbors got alarmed.

Wajuku's best friend Nelson started distancing himself from Wajuku when Frederick came to Buea. He hated Frederick because he was so full of himself and also was a womanizer. Nelson also complained that Wajuku paid more attention to Frederick than to him. This was not true, just that Nelson felt like a visitor each time he visited and the camaraderie that existed before was going down because of the third party.

Nelson was an orphan who lost his parents when he was barely one year old. He was brought up by his uncle who was a shoe mender in Bamenda and his wife a hair dresser. He was admitted into UB the same year with Wajuku. In Buea, he lived with his aunt who was a seamstress. They lived in an apartment with just two rooms and a sitting room. The aunt used one of the rooms alone while her seven children including Nelson managed the other room and part of the sitting room was used as tailoring workshop. This was very uncomfortable to Nelson.

Nelson’s aunt gave him a lot of work. He will wash the plates, mob the floor and cook while the other girls sat doing nothing. Worst still, after cooking his aunt will order him not to share the food until she was through with work and this was usually late in the night. In effect, Nelson ate once in a day.

He explained his situation to Wajuku and pleaded to live with him. Wajuku could not deny his best friend and so took him but there was one thing bordering him and he ask Nelson, how
