    The previous night's storm contained extremely damaging winds, leaving nothing behind but downed trees and the oppressive heat it was supposed to relieve. Sticky and disgusting is how I would describe the weather on that July the ninth when I took my fateful walk. I always thought taking a walk in the woods was one of the least dangerous and most relaxing ways to spend your free time. Everything has a way of surprising you.

    My name is Mary Lornel and I was a nature buff, still am I guess. I would walk in the valleys and small hills of my native Virginia enjoying the nature. I was lucky to live in a rural area far removed from the noise of man, except the occasional ATV or chainsaw. My backyard was about ten yards of grass, blending right into a deciduous forest. Nothing but woodland untouched for around a hundred years was my true backyard. It was there I would take my walks every day, among the miles and miles of trees, such a lovely place. Inheriting arthritis instead of money was my family’s gift to me, so I always try to keep moving.

    Even on those hot and nasty days I would go for my walk or hike as I liked to call it and try to convince myself it was arduous. A small backpack with water, a GPS, and my walking stick were all I would bring with me. I never planned on being gone for more than a few hours at a time, usually I never was. I knew those woods like the back of my hand and loved the fact I was the only one there. I felt so privileged and lucky to see the undisturbed nature most people never witness.

    Walking up the third crest in a small hill that day I noticed to my left that a massive oak tree had fallen in the storm, it was standing tall just a few days ago.

    Damn, I said as I took a drink of water walking over to the fallen, exposed roots. The roots were ten
