I started writing when I was eleven or twelve, when my mother bought me one of those cheap toy knockoffs of a laptop, but the good thing about it was the kid-friendly version of a word processor. Basic as basic could get, but I made my first attempt at writing a story, something cheesy about friends getting lost in the forest. The things I write range from the tongue-in-cheek to the very serious. My goal is to write at least one story in each major genre.

"The composition of a tragedy requires testicles." [Voltaire]
Chapter One
I was walking along the bridge that spanned the Susquehanna River. I could see my house from here, the lights burning brightly through the downstairs bay window of the living room and through the single kitchen window above the sink. My parents were inside, fighting about some meaningless bullshit. Upstairs, the light to my sister’s room was muted against a heavy beige curtain so thick that it might easily be mistaken for a blanket.
Whenever I needed some peace and quiet, this was the place for me. I could stare down at the river, which had an intense calming effect on me. It was peaceful in spite of the occasional traffic that traversed the bridge, and the world certainly felt like it was mine for the taking. Besides, I would much rather spend a peaceful night standing out here in the cold looking out at the water than in the house listening to them fighting about some irrelevant piece of information about which they were both most likely wrong anyway. I hated them in that moment. Not an all-consuming hatred that you read about in books where enemy fights enemy. My hatred was tinged with love because they were my parents, after all.
Over the roar of the river, I heard footsteps- rather, heels, clicking on the pavement. Looking up, I saw a woman stepping under the fan of light beneath the lamppost, wearing tight jeans that hugged her hips, a black top that left nothing to the imagination, and shoulder-length hair the color of honey. Her heels were open-toed, and I could see the most beautiful shade of red on her painted toenails. Despite her stunning beauty, there was something else that captured my immediate attention but I was unable to place it. Hi, I’m Jasper,
I said, pushing out my pent-up breath in a rush of emotion, immediately enamored with her and unable to explain the reason.
Cynthia. Lovely night,
she said with a smile, her voice as soft and luxurious as the finest cashmere. I nodded, unable to speak. She peered over the edge into the water below, which was silvered from the full moon above. Sighing wistfully, she stepped closer to me so there was barely a discernible space between us. That’s when I was hit with her amazing scent- a mixture of vanilla, raspberries, and a hint of... chocolate? I smiled at her, and she returned the smile, albeit a small one.
You smell amazing,
I pointed out, unsure of what else to say to this beautiful stranger. She nodded her head and started to walk away without a word. Wait,
I called after her. Do you live around here?
Turning toward me, I saw a glint in her eyes in spite of the darkness around us. She shook her head and started walking away again. At that moment, I realized if I allowed her walk out of my life I would never see her again. In that instant, I needed to know who she was, her innermost secrets, life ambitions, everything. Stay here and talk with me,
I said softly. It’s a beautiful night, in spite of the chill.
Then I realized she was wearing only a thin top; surely, she must be freezing. Are you cold?
I asked, ready to shrug out of my leather jacket.
Turning to face me once more, she put up a hand to stop my inane babbling. Listen, you don’t know me, and I don’t want there to be any false pretenses between us. I’m not looking for anyone, I’m just out for a walk. You seem like a nice guy and all, but you would only end up being hurt.
You can ask my parents,
I said as I pointed to the modest two-story house, of nondescript architecture. Blue siding, white shutters, aglow with accent lighting. I live right there.
She laughed, and I thought it was the most beautiful sound in the world- like twinkling bells or something equally romantic. There was also something slightly off-putting about it, but I couldn’t quite put a finger on what it could be.
That wonderful laugh only made me like her more, and without realizing it she had made me forget my own issues at home. Would you like to get a cup of coffee?
I asked as I waved my hand toward the house. My mom makes the best cappuccino in the world.
Thank you, but no,
she said softly, her voice washing over me with its perfection. I really should be going.
My heart jumped into my throat at the thought of her walking out of my life so shortly after her arrival. It hadn’t been a grand, Oscar-worthy entrance, but it had made a lasting impression just the same. I fell in love with her during those brief, fleeting moments, both of us sharing the chill of the night. Can I see you again?
She opened her mouth to what I was sure would be a
