    BRIEF HISTORY

Rowing was first used as a means of transport in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Ancient writings mentioned rowing games in funeral rites as early as 1430 B.C. as well as in the epic Greek poem Aeneid. Additionally, the then city-state Venice, would host festivals that featured regatta races as early as the 13th century.

The first known ‘modern’ rowing races began from competition among the professional watermen that provided ferry and taxi service on the River Thames in London. Prizes for wager races were often offered by wealthy owners of riverside houses and were extremely popular with the betting crowds in London. The sport spread as prize matches amongst professionals similarly became popular on other rivers throughout Great Britain. In America, the earliest known race dates back to 1756 in New York, when a Dutch pettiauger defeated a Cape Cod whaleboat in a race.

The first and oldest public rowing club was established in England in 1818. By 1843 there were rowing clubs throughout Europe and the first college rowing team ever was established by Yale. The International Federation of Rowing Associations, one of the first regulatory sports federations, was established in 1892 and began immediately hosting annual European Rowing Championships.

Rowing has been included in all of the editions of the Olympic Games, except in the 1896 Athens Games. It was on the schedule for the Athens Games, but a stormy sea compelled officials to cancel the events. Women made their rowing debut at the 1976 Games in Montreal with six events. Over the years different events have been introduced and replaced. The most recent addition was the ‘lightweight’ category, beginning in the 1996 Atlanta Games.
