    INTRODUCTION

Would it surprise you if I told you that Bamboo is one of the most versatile plants you can find? It has been used by man for thousands of years, is prevalent in areas such as Africa and South East Asia, yet many of us today are ignorant about how many uses it has.

Although it looks like wood, bamboo is a grass which commonly grows in Asia and China though, as you will see, it is a very adaptable plant which will grow pretty much anywhere, given the right conditions. It is very hard and almost impossible to destroy - in fact, one of the few things which can cause a bamboo to die is when it flowers (it takes up to 2 years to complete the flowering process) and many bamboo plants die from this! There are countless varieties - we know of over 600 clumping varieties at the moment and more are discovered all the time. It is believed that there are currently over 1,600 varieties of bamboo growing throughout the world.

The beauty of this grass is that in a society where man is cutting down trees faster than new ones can grow, we are in danger of running out of wood to use for carpentry and making tools etc. Because bamboo can grow so fast and is so versatile, we can use it in place of wood - and it has the advantage that it is a source we will never run out of because it grows so fast. In fact, in many ways it is MORE useful than wood because it can be molded to the shape you want, whereas wood has to be cut to shape and cannot be manipulated, and it is very strong. It is a common sight to see the grass bending with the wind, sometimes almost bent double, and yet it never breaks!

Interestingly, almost the whole grass can be used for different things - Pandas especially love to eat the bamboo shoots. Because it is so strong it can be used, not only to make seats and tables, but it can be adapted to make a roof, kites and even paper, amongst other things. Different parts of the bamboo are used for different jobs.

It is important to note that there are many different types of bamboo such as woody and temperate bamboo, and not forgetting the fargesia rufa which originates from China. I will give you more information on the different uses for the various types of bamboo a little later in this book.

The two main types of bamboo are clumping and running - the clumping type is particularly adaptable and lends itself to countless uses. The running bamboo grows in all climates and is almost impossible to destroy because it is so hardy and grows so fast. Don’t be surprised if you find your bamboo has grown to its full height within 12 weeks. This type often takes over the area where it is growing which makes it difficult to control. A major disadvantage of running bamboo is that it is much more brittle so it is not as useful as clumping bamboo.

When you look at a bamboo stem you notice that it is only very thin, at most a couple of
