      Jake walked through the wagon wheel space station. His steps echoed in the hallway and he listened to his uneven gait. He tried to walk without limping and without appearing to limp. He listened to the echo of his steps until it sounded like he was walking okay.

      He found General Henry standing in the flight hangar watching the welders and mechanics repairing a space fighter. The black slacks and dark blue tunic were inspection perfect and his aquiline face made him look like a Roman emperor inspecting the battlefield.

      Jake took a deep breath, his heart hammering in his chest. He put his bag on the deck and walked over to the general.

      General, he said, over the noise of the arc welders.

      Henry turned to him, MacMillian, and at first his blue eyes were hard, then they showed surprise, then they softened as if he knew what was coming and regretted it.

      Jake took off his blue cap with the space fleet crossed wings insignia on it.

      The General’s cold blue eyes inspected the scars on his scalp, then they studied him.

      Heard you had a bad time in the hospital.
