D.M. Cupp

D.M. Cupp was raised in Austin, Texas and grew up writing stories and bringing the characters in his head to paper. D.M. loves to read all types of novels, but his passion is romance. His goal is to create characters that are realistic and that readers can relate to, and keep the reader guessing as the characters take the reader on their story...hopefully leading to a happy ending. When D.M. isn’t writing he is spending time with his friends, family, and partner of three years and their two beautiful babies (a Chihuahua and a Dachshund-Chihuahua mix dubbed a ‘chiwinnie’).

To my babe, MJ, your love and continued support makes me fall for you more and more on a daily basis.

To Ariel, thanks for listening as I introduced you to my characters, told you their story, and helped me throughout this journey.

To Tina, who listened and read the many drafts until I was sure everything was perfect. To my parents who gave the genes of creativity and a family to retreat to when the world was too much to bear. Y’all are the best people anyone could ask for.

    Love Always,

    Chapter One

Robby Brackford walked through the busy quad on the East Texas College campus. East Texas College was located in Pine Woods, Texas a small town in east Texas. The town was two hours north of Houston. The college offered many four-year programs, but many students would attend only for the first two years just to get away from home, and then move on to a larger college. The quad was busy with activity and the college had set up student groups and activity booths to recruit and encourage new freshmen to join.

All different student organizations were shouting for attention, Come make a difference with the student council, one girl was telling people as they passed the booth. Robby was just looking until he had to be at the sports arena for his first swim team meeting. Robby had been on his high school swim team and due to his speed had earned the nickname Fish.

Robby walked up to a booth with an older guy that was either a sophomore or junior standing passing out flyers, Hey would you like to audition for the fall play?

I’ve never acted before so I probably would be awful at it. Robby said wanting to walk away, but really wanted to stay and talk to this man that had caught his attention. Robby didn’t label himself as gay, but he had experimented the night of his senior prom, but that was one time.

You’ve never acted? Have you pretended to be interested in someone just to get your way?

Robby blushed in embarrassment, Maybe, Robby answered with a grin.

Did you get away with it? The young man asked.

Robby only smiled this time and looked away.

Just come by and audition. If you like it then maybe you’ve found something to pass the time during your first semester and possible an interest, and if you don’t like it then what have you lost except thirty minutes of your time?

I guess you have a point. I’m Robby Brackford. Robby introduced extending his hand.

Hi, I’m Trevor Donovan. So did I convince you? If I get one more person to audition I get a set of steak knives.

Robby laughed at the joke and smiled, Almost. So what is the play?

"Well it’s a take on Romeo and Juliet called Pine Tree Story. It’s about a guy and girl that meet and its love at first sight but the two attend rivaling colleges. The guy, Robert, attends East Texas College and the girl, Isabella, attends St. Monica’s College. It’s like a modern day version of the movie West Side Story. Have you seen the movie?"

Robby took a deep breath, I’ve heard of it, but I haven’t seen the movie, but my friend loved the movie and always tried to get me to watch it.

"Well your friend was right trying to get you to see it. I mean it’s a classic love story based from the play Romeo and Juliet."

Robby didn’t want to talk about Josh Cooper because it hurt to think how he’d hurt him in the beginning of the summer, So it’s a musical and not just a play. You’re very clever. You must really want those steak knives.

There you are man. I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Scotty said rushing up to him. Scotty looked at Robby and to the booth where he was standing. Hey we better go we’ve got that swim team meeting.

Robby looked down at his watch. He had completely lost track of time, Well thanks for the information."

Here take a flyer, and I hope to see you at the auditions. Trevor said handing him a flyer as Scotty pulled him away from the booth.

    **

That evening Robby and Scotty were back in their dorm room unpacking from their first day on campus. Scotty was flexing in front of his door-length closet mirror, I’m going to have to get a calendar. I mean look at me. I won’t be able to keep the girls away.

Really, Casanova, you’re going to beat them away with a stick? Robby asked emptying his last box in the room that he would call home for the year.

Come on man you know if you were gay you would want to tap this. Scotty said slapping his ass.

Robby laughed at the action not sure what would be the appropriate response to a person one only met a few hours earlier. Robby looked over at his roommate, and could admit that Scotty was good-looking. Robby had been told throughout high school that he was attractive with his wavy blond hair and deep blue eyes. Not being conceded the girls had always wanted to be with him and even some of the guys; well at least that’s what his best friend Josh had told him.

So, Robby, do you have a girlfriend?

Uh no, we broke up this summer before prom.

Good because this room is going to be famous by the time we leave.

Robby had never been the type to juggle multiple relationships. It was always messy and you were always bound to get caught eventually.

Scotty walked over to Robby’s desk and picked up the flyer that his roommate had been handed earlier, Are you really thinking about auditioning for that musical?

I don’t know. I’m thinking about it. It could be fun.

Really dude, a musical? Don’t you think that’s kind of gay? Plus it will put a dent on the number of chicks you will pick up.

Don’t you think that’s kind of close-minded? I mean I could be really good, become discovered, and then leave your ass here and move to Hollywood, and get with a lot more chicks.

    Well what about swimming?

Robby didn’t feel he needed to justify every action he made with his roommate, but at the same time he was concerned that if he just let it slide he would be labeled as gay, and being in college this was the last thing that he wanted. It’s just an audition. It’s highly unlikely that I’ll even get a part and if I do it will probably be some small role that won’t even take that much time.

Doesn’t the theater say, ‘there are no small parts; just small actors’? Scotty asked stretching out on his twin bed.

Dude, I’m beat. I’m going to bed.

    **

Robby stood in the middle of the quad and saw the drama booth where he had met and talked to Trevor the previous day.

Back already? So did you decide to audition?

Yeah I have. Robby said finally approaching the booth and
