About this ebook

A SWEET TASTE OF ITALY
A SAPORE DOLCE D’ITALIA

This is an immortal tale of a romance between two mature respectable people, an English lady and an Italian man. They share traditional family and moral values which to a younger generation may seem outdated. Neither expected their hearts to be captured by a love affair at their age or in their situations, living three thousand miles apart and unable to speak each other’s languages.
It is written with great charm refreshing tenderness and breath-taking simplicity. The heroine paints a touching picture of her “Sweet taste of Italy”. The author leaves the reader with a somewhat enigmatic conclusion.
The story takes place in the picturesque town of Amalfi world renowned for its beauty. The author encapsulates the charm of the people who live in this stunning part of Italy. The flash backs to her own very different style of living at home in England serves to emphasize the impact on the main characters as the book moves through their shared experiences. A Sweet Taste of Italy could be said to be the twenty first century version of “Brief Encounter”. It is a
“SERENDIPITY” book not to be missed.

    CHAPTER ONE

    THE BEGINNING

    L’INIZIO

Our first visit to Italy had been an extraordinary adventure. First of all we missed the plane. My husband had returned home from work and was lying in the bath when he called out to me,

"What day is it? I told him.

    What date is it?

There was a moment of silence. I realized we had been so busy trying to tie up all the loose ends required when one runs a business before we could depart for our holiday that we had got the day and the date mixed up.

I hurried into the bathroom and we stared in horror at each other. We were supposed to be at the airport boarding a flight for Naples. My husband panicked. I took control. A succession of frenzied phone calls finally got me through to somebody on a desk at Gatwick Airport, I hardly knew who. I think it must have been the tour operator, who said,

Don’t worry, it happens all the time.

Really? I exclaimed. I could hardly believe there were other people as careless as we had been.

What do we do? I asked anxiously.

Just come at the same time tomorrow, I’ll get you on that flight, you’ll only lose a day. I was told.

When we reached the seaside resort of Maiori we were transferred again to a mini bus having to lug heavy cases and cabin baggage across the busy street. Most of our fellow travellers were
