Part One – First Person Point of View
The Break-In
It was in the middle of the morning when I received a phone call from Christy Parker. She told me that someone broke into her house. I informed her that I would be over within a half hour.
When I arrived, I asked her to stay outside while I checked out the house to make sure the intruder wasn't inside. I checked the main floor, the second floor, and the basement, but I didn't notice anyone around, so I told her that she could enter the house.
What time were you gone?
I asked her that question, so I could write down the approximate time the house was broken into.
I arrived at my house around 5:30 PM. I'm a substitute teacher. I tried to enter my house, but I found that my coat rack was knocked down in front of the door. I managed to get my two big dogs, Penny and Tippy, back and to pick up the coat rack, so I could walk inside. I saw my curtain, that was in front of one of my rooms, moved to the side. I thought my dogs were afraid of something and knocked the rack down and moved the curtain. I walked into the hall way and saw the doors open to the bathroom, upstairs, and my two bedrooms. I knew then that someone had broken into my house. That's when I called you.
Did you notice anything missing?
I don't know. I've lived in this house for years, and nothing like this has ever happened to me.
I understand how upsetting this could be. Why don't you look around and see if you find something missing?
I will.
I walked around the house with Miss Parker, she pointed out different items that the intruder had searched inside. She told me that drawers were open and things removed, but after she looked in each room, she wasn't sure if anything was missing because she had so many belongings.
I can't find anything yet.
I need to make out a report, so I'll return shortly.
Okay.
When I returned, I asked Miss Parker if she found anything missing, but she still wasn't sure, so I handed her the report and told her that if she remembered anything that was taken, she needed to notify me at one of these numbers.
I'm going to patrol the area tonight to make sure everything is okay.
I appreciate that. I'm really nervous about what happened to me. My twin sister, Megan, went out of town and will be back tonight, so I'll be glad when she returns.
That's good you'll have someone with you tonight. I'm going to leave now, but I'll patrol the neighborhood tonight and have someone else patrol the area this weekend. I would suggest that you get a door that has locks on both sides, or keep both of your locks secure.
Thanks. I will lock the door knob and the dead bolt, too.
After that, I left the house and drove around later on to make sure everything was all right in the neighborhood. Then, I was called to investigate another break-in that was in the neighborhood west of here.
During my second investigation of the evening, I received a phone call from Christy. She told me that her sweeper was taken.
