    Hit me hah-duh.

    Hit me hah-duh.

The beat thudded that question through the walls of the club and vibrated the concrete walk under the line-up outside the eastern door. Young men and women who looked like boys and girls to Jerome. They swayed and pushed to that beat, excreting pheromones like crazy in their sweat, pressing up against each other, talking high and loud, laughing, toking, coughing.

Jerome felt the arms and breasts of a punked-up girl shoved up against his back for a moment and felt almost dizzy. It was sex. Arousal. Life! God, it had been so long that he wanted to throw his head back and howl at the night.

Instead he kept his face low, half expecting one of these kids in their skin-tight shirts or dropped-waist jeans to really see him and raise up their painted nails to point and shout Old man! Old man!

    Old. When had that happened?

"Holy shit! shrieked the girl behind him whose breasts Jerome’s back had recently been acquainted with. That looks nothing like you!"

    My cousin, said a boy.

Dude, you’re like so busted, said another boy.

Like they care, said the first boy.

Like they care. At least Jerome didn’t have to worry about being asked for ID. It didn’t stop his hands from shaking and his body going clammy under his armpits. He itched to simply step out of the line, sprint back to his car, and drive.

Yeah? Where? Back home where’d he’d been choking?

    Home?

He ran his hand over the cold sweat on the back of his neck and worked his head back and forth.

Ahead of him a girl in a skimpy leather top and purple lipstick, bumped her hips back and forth to the beat from inside. She poked at her girlfriend and looked back at Jerome as she moved, interested. Not interested like What are you doing here? interest. Lust interest. She was maybe nineteen. What? She wants a sugar daddy? Get out of here, man.

Before he could cut, however, the exit door down by the back of the line opened in a blare of techno-pop to eject a group of five hooting drunks. It seemed to pound the line forward like a shot of speed. Everyone pushed so Jerome was caught stumbling towards the front door.

Only to hit the closed front door. The door’s keeper, a slick little guy who sat on a bar stool
