    INTRODUCTION

    Since ancient times, Wiccans have practiced the Craft and created magick using ritual ceremony and correspondences. Crucial to this custom are Witches’ tools and talismans, powerful items that help focus energy around the altar in order to manifest the desired outcome of their spellwork.

    Primary Witches’ tools consist of the blade or sword, the wand, the cup or chalice and the pentacle. Also included are the cauldron, the witches’ cord or belt and any consecrated or charged jewellery. I have added divining tools, such as Tarot cards, pendulums and Runes, as well as stones, herbes, secrets, talismans and the Book of Shadows to this list, for they aid Wiccans in effectively practicing the many aspects of the Craft.

    The most important consideration is to be totally pleased and comfortable with each tool, as you will use them whenever you cast a spell or perform a ritual.

    PRIMARY TOOLS

    The BLADE or sword represents East and the element of air. Also known as an athame, traditionally, this ritual knife will have a black handle, though it can be a knife of any sort. It corresponds to the suit of swords in the Tarot deck and is used to cast your circle. You should use ginger to consecrate your blade.

    The WAND represents South and the element of fire. It corresponds to the suit of wands in the Tarot deck. Your wand can be made of any material; many Witches choose to make their own using a small branch or twig. If you choose this route, first ask permission of the tree. If it
