Come along, Thomas, Grandmother Gladys said as she ploughed ahead through the crowded street, shifting aside pedestrians as an ice breaker parts the frozen floes. Although her prow was smaller, it was no less imposing to those on her unwavering course.

Thomas, a scrawny, somewhat thin, eleven (almost twelve) year old followed in his grandmother’s wake, keeping close to her stern as the crowd closed behind. He followed because, as his mother had intoned, it will be your birthday soon and mother insists you must select a suitable gift, said explanation ending in a sigh of resignation as if not the will of God, much less that of Grandmother’s only daughter, would stay the course of events.

The cab had taken them to a part of the city he had not seen before. The shops were quite different from the brightly lit malls he’d frequented. The buildings were ill kempt; graffiti and overlapping posters plastered randomly on the crumbling brickwork.

Some of the shop windows looked as if they hadn’t been cleaned in months, although the products inside most appeared clean and fresh.

Thomas had already accompanied her through innumerable stores, none of which had a single item that grandmother would consider worthy of consideration. Although he had expressed an interest in a huge chemistry set in a wooden box at one point several hours ago, she had dismissed the suggestion. Remember the unfortunate event with your father’s brother, she’d said, referring to the incident that forced his parents to abandon their old house. Your mother would never permit it.

Thomas hated shopping and honestly would have preferred being at home playing GREEN DRAGON with his friends. Pinchon, his character, was on the verge of finally defeating Squirmish, the goblin general, thanks to the offer of support from Lastel, the Elf king, who was the third party in the triangular war for control of the GREEN DRAGON world.

Thomas was certain he could trust Lastel this round, although one was never certain of loyalty in the game. The three formed alliances and as frequently betrayed one another when it provided some tactical advantage; strategy was always for the individual.

Three turns ago, for example, Squirmish had been his partner in an assault on Lastel’s castle to gain his part of the key to the green dragon. But, sensing an easy victory over Lastel, Squirmish had left one of his gates unprotected. Pinchon thought the opportunity to seize goblin territory was too tempting and immediately attacked his erstwhile ally. Consequently, Squirmish, now unsupported by Pinchon and fighting on two fronts, had been beaten back by the Elf king’s superior forces. As a result he had been so weakened that he could be completely eliminated, that is, if Pinchon and Lastel cooperated in the next turn, which would leave just the two of them to battle for control of the GREEN DRAGON world, but that turn would not come until this interminable shopping trip came to an end.

Aha! Grandmother exclaimed as she raised one well-manicured hand to indicate the worn front of a dingy bookstore. I’m glad I found it so easily, as if the previous hours of dawdling and poking among
