This book is dedicated to my father, who lit the dream of cruising in my 4-year-old imagination.

Chapter 1: The Cruising Dream
Have you ever stood on the dock, watched a sailboat slowly slip from its moorings, and dreamed of sailing away? What’s holding you back from realizing that dream?
Very often the first step to sailing off into the sunset is convincing your partner to get on-board
and buy into your dream of becoming a cruiser.
This is not a How to Sail
book. This is a How to convince your significant other that you need to go sailing
book. It’s also a We can do it!
book, a Why not?
, a Go Ahead and Live Your Dream
book, and a Cruising the World Isn’t as Scary as You Think
book.
This book should be read by anyone who has just been bitten by the idea of sailing away to a tropical paradise.
Remember that sailboat you watched sail off to sea, while you felt left behind standing on the dock? You might then have gone home and excitedly related the wonder of sailing off into the sunset to your spouse or partner. He or she, sitting at the kitchen table, sifting through this month’s bills and credit card statements, were somewhat less than thrilled with your idea. They, without knowing it, fired off a contrite salvo of words regarding expenses, money, time, and the kids.
Besides,
they finish, you know nothing about sailing!
This bursts your bubble and brings your dreams crashing down. You, somewhat miffed and more than a little bruised, go back to the life that you would like to change for the better.
This book is full of all the reasons you need to move your dream of sailing the world from your secret Bucket List
to your family’s Done It
list.
Often we would like to add excitement, fun, friends, love, romance, health, peace of mind, or just a change to our lives. Cruising is the perfect way to make those changes happen. This book will show you and your significant other just why you should become a cruising family and enjoy a life of excitement and adventure, friends and happiness.
One friend recently related his entry into the cruising lifestyle. He didn’t see it as a mid-life crisis at the time. He was only 35. He had a good job as a high school teacher, a nice house in the suburbs, a beautiful wife, and two terrific children. From the outside it looked like the perfect life. There was just one problem.
He was bored out of his mind!
For weeks his wife noticed him up late at night staring at the blue-white computer screen. One night, sliding silently up behind him, she saw what he was eagerly gazing at.
Pictures.
Pictures of his dream.
Pictures of sailboats.
There was just one problem.
He knew nothing about boats.
Actually, there were several problems. Neither of them knew anything about sailing, they didn’t have an extra hundred thousand dollars kicking around the family budget, and they both had successful careers they didn’t want to quit. But, being a compassionate and understanding wife, she went with him as they looked a one derelict boat for sale after another. Finally, an abandoned Bayfield 32’ was found that their meager family budget could afford. From these beginnings they launched an adventure that, unbeknownst to either of them, would strengthen their marriage, educate their children, make all of them more healthy than they had ever been, and show them the wonders of the world.
Cruising around a tropical sea while manta rays glide beneath your boat may appear like a fantastic pipe dream to some and an impossibility to others. A life style they would never even consider.
Think of the danger! The risk! The world is too scary!
they quiver.
This book works to dispel some of the myths that hold people back from cruising. In reading it you will find that cruising is possible for anyone with the courage to untie the dock lines and point the bow towards the horizon.
Go ahead; you only come this way once. Be brave. Seize the dream. Become a cruiser.
But before we get to untie the dock lines we need to figure out a couple of things. For example, what exactly is a cruiser? To many a land based person, cruisers are those who pay their money, fly to Fort Lauderdale, and bumble aboard one of those white, floating apartment buildings called cruise ships for a week long float around the Caribbean. Cruising in that sense involves a debauchery of food, drinks, highly sterilized shore tours inside air conditioned busses, sunburns on tender never-see-the-sun
