      Chapter 1

      'Where the hell is global warming when you need it!'

      As I stepped out of the relative warmth of the car the icy wind hit me in the face like a wave of daggers. Whatever remnant of sleep had lingered in my mind was well and truly gone. I took a deep breath. Another working Sunday, here we come. Jumping over puddles and slipping in the mud I trotted across the desolate car park towards the dark building. Behind a tall fence dogs instantly detected my presence and responded with a cacophony of barking, wailing and whining. This cold, early morning start had me attuned to their feelings. Getting up at five on a Sunday morning and then driving through the dark empty town to clock on for a long shift at the Bird Wood Animal Shelter wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. But then again, even in the midst of animal madness the first veterinarian on duty enjoys rare moments of solitude, and for these I was eternally grateful.

      I fumbled with the keys to the backdoor and stepped into a dark, echoing silence. In the distance, a chorus of fluid pumps beeped a
