    About the Author

    Introduction

Smith Wigglesworth said A minute under the unction of God is worth more than worlds and A.W. Tozer remarked More spiritual progress can be made in one short moment of speechless silence in the awesome presence of God than in years of mere study.

This has also been my experience. I came to faith through a powerful experience of the Holy Spirit in my bedroom with no one else present. At that time I was depressed and doing a Ph. D. in atomic physics which proved to me that intellect was not life’s answer. I have had many extraordinary experiences of the Spirit and countless other everyday experiences of the Holy Spirit. It is these experiences that have taught me more about God than all my study of Scriptures, reading books and listening to messages. I encourage you to use this book to help you in your experience of God and not just in your understanding of His operations.

I wrote most of the material for this book in 1997 whilst a Senior Pastor of a church I had founded. During this time I lectured a course in the anointing (that I had written) at various Bible Colleges across Australia. This book has been formed from the material I lectured and my experiences in leading a church that focussed on attracting the anointing of the Spirit. Fifteen years later I am publishing it on Kindle after having published two other books in print and Kindle – Understanding the witness of the Spirit and Building Spiritual Enterprises. I resisted changing my language of the day too much (as 15 years has brought many different perspectives!)

The book has many Scriptures as it is important to approach this topic with solid doctrine and not just about personal experiences. Each point is supported with Scripture and Biblical stories to bring confidence that the Holy Spirit will also support our actions when we do likewise.

Chapter 1 – The spiritual man

It is clear from the Bible that people can operate in a number of different modes.

    We can operate naturally

1 Corinthians 2:14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Every person has the capacity to operate naturally, and we must. We have eyes to see, ears to hear, as well as other natural senses. He created us with a mind to think, reflect, be creative and so on. God gave us natural capacities to function in the natural world. God wants us to use those capacities to their fullest. However, they are not designed to function in the spiritual world.

2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.

The natural man may be curious about the anointing, observe its effects, even try to have the anointing, but he will be unsuccessful.

    We can operate carnally

Romans 8:7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be.

There is nothing good about the carnal mind. We operate carnally when we just do our own thing and live by our own rules. The carnal man is not interested in the things of God. He defies them, challenges them and runs away from them. We must continually aim to crucify the carnal man.

    We can operate spiritually

He designed us as spiritual beings with spiritual senses to operate in the spiritual world. If we are believers, our spirit man is ready to operate at any moment. We can readily go from operating naturally to operating spiritually. But we cannot readily go from operating carnally to operating spiritually.

What is the spirit man like? It is generally accepted doctrine that the spirit man is comprised of three faculties - conscience, devotion (or communion) and intuition (or discernment).

To operate spiritually, our spirit must first come alive. The Bible describes our spirit as being dead if we have not been born again.

John 3:5-7 Jesus answered, Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again."

Being born again enables our spirit to start relating to God. The spirit becomes new. We have the ability to have communion with God. We are born again and become spiritual babies and God comes in us to help us. There is no longer any sin blocking us from God. We have direct access to God. We have the ability to increasingly understand God’s will, and to understand what sin is. We will start developing the ability to discern right from wrong. But all these things can just remain potential in a new born stage.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

The same Spirit who saves us can also establish us. As a newborn we are full of potential for to be an adult, but we will remain babies if we do not grow. Some people never leave being a spiritual baby because the never feed their spirit.

    Our spirit man can grow

2 Corinthians 4:16 - Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

The Bible describes different states of spiritual growth or strength:-

    Babies

1 Peter 2:2 as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.

When we are freshly born again, we are described as spiritual babes. We may have the wisdom of years, much experience in life, or much time in religious matters, but we are still spiritual babes.

As every parent can testify, babies make a lot of mess, are a lot of work; but nothing is as exciting as a new baby on the scene. Babies cry a lot and always want feeding. And they should be fed. This passage in first Peter also gives the key to growing as a babe in Christ - feed on the word of God. It is imperative that those who are new to the Christian faith should read, meditate and obey the word of God as a first priority. Also, those who have been Christians for some time should continue to desire and feed on the word of God, like new born babes.

Everyone loves a new born babe, but if it doesn’t grow up, then you soon get sick of changing it. First Peter follows on to give us a second imperative to all Christians to grow from being a babe.

1 Peter 2:3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.

We grow by understanding that God is good. That he gives good gifts. If that truth is not rooted deeply in our life, then recognise where you are, and feed on that truth. Forget about the devil, forget about the second coming, forget about counselling, forget about everything else until you get his goodness deep into you. If you haven’t tasted God’s goodness, that is what He has for you right now. Not only know it theoretically, but experience it. Babyhood is great as a believer, but not to stay in forever.

    Infants

The second phase of growth in our spirits is as an infant. Toddlers discover things, they think they know all things, they struggle to come under authority. They are easily tossed to and fro by people’s ideas. They experiment with ideas and thoughts. If they do not have good discipline, they will injure their future, physically or mentally. The most important thing that a toddler spirit needs to do is put themselves under the nurture and authority of a good local church.

Ephesians 4:11-14 "And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some
