O. G. Tomes

Born in 1963 in a suburb of Birmingham, AL. A daughter and sister, mother and now a grandmother she has spent her life caring for those around her. Now with her youngest close to graduating and heading off to college she has found the time to publish the chronicled stories of her favorite characters, some of which were created while she was in the first grade and used in creating story books for her children. A weaver of tales since her youth, as O.G. Tomes, she now spins the yarn creating story lines from the cloth of life. Meshing the old with the new, giving way for her readers to rethink the whole concept of 'good vs. evil' along with the humorous and darker sides of human nature. You can expect a varied reading selection as eclectic as her reading tastes are to be produced that follow the inclinations of her natural talents. She writes from her quaint home atop the mountain in an area of the Appalachians that for centuries has been home to her family. Her unique gifts were fostered by her great grandmother, her grandmother and her father giving her a solid foundation from which she writes. Self-publishing has allowed her to utilize the multifaceted array of her natural talents in promoting others by mentoring, reviews, interviews and she has produced several book trailers for her literary works, as well as for other writers and authors."Some of my first memories are of telling stories to my siblings at bedtime. As I grew older, I was always the one requested to 'tell a story' around the fire at summer camp. The 'consumate narrator' on almost any topic usually kept me close to the line of trouble in school. Time progressed yet I still challenge myself to reach further in to my creativity with established goals as my incentive. Simply, I love to write and create. I cherish my family, whom understands my eccentric and varied approach to everything 'author'.

    SHE BECOMES YOU

    Chapter 1

A last scream echoed and then died out as it traveled across the deserted lake. Thunder was heard as the storm rumbled closer. The day’s light had waned making the occasional flashes of lightning an aid in seeing the storm’s fast approach. A wind was picking up and becoming a force of reckoning. The bits of debris carried by the storm stung her cheeks and eyes.

An arm was raised, then moved in seen as a downward arc and as the light left, there was a sickening thud in the darkness as the victim’s body fell against the old wood of the boat dock. A half twist to make sure it was over. A brilliant flash of light made it clear enough to see the drop of blood dangling on the knife’s tip. The sight of it brought a warm feeling to her.

Before letting go of the handle held tight in her fist, she admitted she was trembling. Stretches of near silence were back dropped by the sound of the lake lapping against the pylons supporting the dock. It was not her first kill and it would not be her last.

She pulled the pillowcase containing wire and bricks closer. Grabbing it by a corner she dumped out the contents. Beginning the ritualistic work soothed her. She had won, again. The wire went through several bricks then she twisted. Wrapping the wire around the ankles she then pulled it tight. Tight enough to cut through the flesh leaving it twisted against the bone, securing the bricks to weigh the body down. This one didn’t need to come floating to the top to be found like before. Before, she had learned the technique. Before, she was only able to relish her urges and the act of killing itself. Over the years, she had learned to fit in.

The storm was appropriate for this turn in her fate. The rain would wash the evidence of her act clean.

Now her real life could begin.

She woke up screaming, drenched in sweat. Damn the memories!

She turned the key in the ignition hearing the engine break the night’s silence and peered out as far as the headlights would let her. Putting the transmission in drive she pulled away planning her revenge as she plotted out her new life. She hoped that was her last nap before reaching home.

    Chapter 2

Amy scribbled away in her journal finishing the last scene of the chapter she was working on. This was her fourth book and still she relished the time spent writing away in a world only she could see until she published her work and shared it with the world. Pausing she looked up and saw Tina’s truck enter the parking lot where they usually met to do a drop and switch for their children. Thankfully, tonight, it would be just her son she was picking up.

They had very little time together these days since he had started seeing Tina’s daughter. It was, of course, that phase in every teenager’s life where they pulled far and hard away from their parents in an attempt to be individuals. The sad part was her son’s girlfriend encouraged the separation on a drastic level. Selfishly. Definitely a manipulation yet somehow she always ended up coming off as endearing but you could never just say ‘enough’ with her. It didn’t work.

Being prone to displays of dramatic emotion based on her mentality of ‘they hate me’ always seemed to be the running reel whenever she was around. She used these dramatics to become the center of attention and truly thought she deserved center stage. The kids at school were always out to get her. The boys always wanted to date her and Amy wondered if she truly believed that every male that entered her life found her sexy and desired her.

It was as if something had been broken, twisted or removed in Sassy. She was a habitual liar. She lied straight to your face making you realize that she did not recognize her lies for what they truly were. She always had the same experience you had when you told her something about yourself. Saddest part of it all was she would soon be a young adult. She had reached the age of consent and this fact only instilled a bone chilling fear. After many weeks of trying to understand her motives and her psych in the hopes she could help her, Amy realized that the infatuation her son had for this child would have to pass before they would be able to move on.

Amy rolled the window down for the quick chat that was expected of her and hoped her urgency to be on her way only came off as needing to return home. For some reason she felt the need to not make these two into enemies. There was something about the other mother but she just couldn’t put her finger on it. If you were in a dark alley and felt a hand upon you …that would explain the physical reactions of fear. She was not in a dark alley yet these two always gave the hair on the back of her neck a nudge whenever they were near. They smiled at the right times although it never quiet reached their eyes. Something was missing that she couldn’t quite put her finger on, yet still missing all the same. She watched her son removing himself from the tangle of limbs that were wrapped around him. Now he stood outside of the SUV and still this woman child clung to him with her arms around his neck. Her mother never seemed to notice this behavior. Which made it even more odd. Either she didn’t care or condoned it which only made it that much more unpleasant for everyone involved. There were statements she made about her daughter that shocked causing a rush of fear to course through one. It was time to have a talk with her son about it and it was possibly going to be tonight!

I only have a moment so can’t chat long! Amy said hoping this would be one of those times that Tina wanted to appear as if she were urgently needed back at her desk.

I don’t have long myself, I have a power point to finish and send off.

Amy sighed in relief and left the conversation to hang in the air while she continued to watch her son struggle with the octopus in the backseat. Her glance at Tina made her take in her breath sharply. She was watching the struggle from the rearview mirror and had an eerie look on her face as if, as if…….as if she were watching a porn movie! Amy’s shock at Tina’s near look of pleasure at seeing her child’s weird and desperate clinging made a shiver run through her. Before she could stop herself, she blurted out,

    Let him go!

Their reactions were stranger if that could be true. Tina turned and grinned bare toothed which came across as a snarl. Sassy turned dead, cold, lifeless of all emotion but sheer hate filled eyes on Amy. She slammed the rear door never allowing her cold glare to leave Amy’s face.

We’ll see you tomorrow! Chimed from Sassy who was turning in the seat to continue to stare as her mother drove away.

"I will slit you from clit to tongue you mouthy bitch! How dare you speak at all!"

Echoed silently around the vehicle as it hurried away from the meeting site. Both had their versions echoing in their heads so similar it was almost an inflection that made the difference, so close were their thought patterns at times.

    Like mother, like daughter.

    Chapter 3

The drive home was filled with companionable silence. Both were riding along not wanting to bring up Sassy’s behavior again. Nothing they had came up with over the last few months seemed to bring on a change in the girl’s neurotic behavior. Maybe they should have talked more about it but her silence was based on not wanting to interfere. His silence was based on the worry of what he had heard from some other students at school that day.

The talk of the young girl’s murder had run rampant through the school all day. What had struck him as odd had been yet another lie by Sassy that he could not find a reason for. There had simply been no reason for her to go around telling people that she had been at his house until after 10 pm the night before. None. His mother had taken her home at 8 pm and secretly inside he had been relieved.

This relationship was fast becoming a problem he didn’t know how to deal with. He wanted to bring the subject of the murder up to his mother but for some reason he held back where he otherwise would have shared easily. It bothered him how much Sassy seemed to be controlling his life these days.

Your Dad has been delayed on this run. He won’t be in until Saturday morning this week. Amy offered as a way to break the silence.

He will still have time to make it to the game if nothing else goes wrong, right?

He thinks he will be in just in time to make it to the field before the ball is tossed into the air. She answered with a grin already seeing him driving up to the ball field in a big rig, which always caused a stir among the smaller children there to see their older siblings play.

This would be Jason’s last year to play at home and he had been invited to play on the ASYO team for the international league because of last year’s championship game. Their win had made the news giving her son’s winning play twenty seconds of national fame. Her pride was undeniable. His talent was obvious. They played and she watched. Just as she had since the beginning when he started playing at the age of 4. Jason played other sports but his first love was soccer and it showed in his game. She glanced over at her son and saw the young man he was fast becoming. She mentally patted herself on the back for a job well done. They pulled into the driveway then waited as the garage door opened. She pulled in and the door began to close as they gathered their various items from the truck.

He made it to the door first and opened it noticing that it was unlocked yet still gallantly allowing his mother to enter before him. She rewarded him with a smile. He returned the smile with one of his own. They both were shaking off the tension of their day as they walked down the hallway leading to the main rooms of the house.

In its heyday it had been filled to overflowing with her children and all of their friends. Time had changed all that and by the time Jason’s teenaged years rolled in, it was usually her, him and his teammates. His sisters had gone off to college then started their careers; their families. Leaving just him and her at home, now that Tony had retired from his CEO position taking to the roads as a truck driver just as he had always wanted. When his parents had passed away in a tragic car accident he had shrugged off the pretense along with his suit and tie, begged his wife’s approval to follow his dream and was hired by a logistics company within a week of applying.

He was gone now more than he was at home but it worked for them and all seemed happy. He drove a rig like he had always dreamed of doing while stuck in a corner office with a view. She wrote books as she had always dreamed of but when their paths crossed they never wanted to be apart. Their love was a strong one to still exist with all the time that separated them now. Their life had a pattern of simple contentment and fulfillment. He worried about leaving her home alone so much. She worried about the dangers he faced out on the road but neither could take the other’s dream away in selfishness so they coped and continued to love.

Jason at first thought his parents would go the route as all his friends’ parents had and end up divorced. Two years later they were just as in love as before they decided to follow their separate dreams so he stopped worrying and let them live their lives as they chose. His sisters had finally quit nagging their dad about leaving their mother to go out on the road. They still brought it up on occasion but mostly they kept it to themselves. When she could, Amy took trips with him on the runs to places she had always wanted to see. It worked for them and that was what mattered most to him.

Jason rushed into the shower trying to avoid thoughts of Sassy’s lies today. She was making less sense as each new day passed. He focused his thoughts on his next game and was determined not to think of her the rest of the night. He knew his mother would have food ready and the chessboard waiting for their nightly game which determined who did all the chores for the next day. He had begun to wonder if his mom was letting him win. Nah! She was too competitive for that!

    Jason! Dinner is ready!

He smiled at the sound of her voice. She always seemed so happy though he worried she might be getting lonely. There were times when he caught her with strange looks on her face but that could be because of her books. If ever he asked, she would laugh and reply,

How can I be lonely with all these people in my head?

He picked up his pace and sat down at the table before she had finished setting it for dinner. He watched her graceful movements. She was always so efficient and he was proud of her. There was no denying that his mom was awesome. Many of his friends thought she was the coolest mom because of the work she did. They would come over to flock around to hear of her newest plots, read her latest chapters and to have in depth discussions with her until the wee of hours of the morning. Right now, she was writing a scifi on cloning which had him rethinking the whole concept with the moral issues it invoked. He was still musing when she sat his plate in front of him then sat down with hers.

Amy slid the chess board closer so they could play during dinner. She had smeared him in their last game of chess so it was her turn to start. They played three games but the last one was his win. He helped her put things in order in the kitchen as they chatted away about her latest plot idea. When they finished, he leaned down to kiss her on the top of her head,

    Night shorty.

    Night son.

Off to their rooms they went. Neither realized the events that would soon be taking place to change their lives forever.

Jason lay in bed until the wee hours of the morning worrying over how to extract himself from the relationship he felt bound in. Sassy’s lies
