About this ebook

Various options for importation from the USA (also applicable to other countries) are discussed. The authors personal experience in the process is drawn upon and includes several perfectly legal, money saving tips like offshore delivery and taking advantage of the Australian/USA free trade agreement.

Four distinct chapters address selection of a boat with analysis of what passage makers and live aboards are sailing, (everything), checklists for inspection, inspection topics, purchase procedures, fitting out and financial comparisons on three methods of importation.

Sounds serious but is also fun and entertaining.

Chapter 0ne. Buying a Yacht, the search.

For most of us buying a yacht, either new or second hand is one of those major purchases in life. Comparable with a house, flat or a flash new car in price but lacking the legal and warranty protections associated with these more mainstream items. For a fact more people in the course of their life will buy real estate or a new car and as a consequence the law is more definite in respect to consumer protection in these areas. Many people will find themselves flogging these same items in order to gain the means to buy the yacht and live the cruising life. Hermann Hesse in the novel Steppenwolf said something like, he who trades the solid earth for water shall surely drown. This is a bit extreme for my taste but the sentiment is sound. Sell all your mainstream liquid possessions and buy the wrong yacht and you may find yourself agreeing wholeheartedly. The wrong yacht in this case being one that is not suitable for your intended use or one that has very limited or no resale appeal. In general, ferro yachts seem to make a good example of boats that take a long time to sell, are difficult to insure and so command low prices. Naturally the most desirable yacht in the world is a poor investment if you pay too much for it or spend vastly more money on improvements than can be recouped from resale. Investment of course, is not everything but buying at the right price is pretty reassuring and leaves more options open for the future. Buying at the right price is easier said than done. As mentioned there are few legal and warranty protections open to the yacht buyer. New vessels will have warranties that may be enforced by law if needed but used yacht purchase is pretty much the sole responsibility of the buyer.

    Shortlist

If you pay for a survey on every boat you look at then your funds will soon be gone and you will be the proud owner of a pile of critical documents rather than your escape machine. This means you need to be selective to a certain degree. Some boats are vetoed with a glance and a curse, others after a few minutes on board. A few need very close inspection. Chances are you will see many boats before finding the one. It makes perfect sense to compile a checklist to record a vessels details, memory can easily play you false after seeing a few boats. A prepared checklist will prompt investigation of all the points considered important to your needs. Capturing this information will also enable you to accurately calculate the total cost of the vessel after you bring it up to your required standard. For example the perfect yacht turns up within the budget but needs an electric anchor winch, new headsail furler, refrigeration and a paint job.

    Purchase for example $ 85 000

    Furler $ 3 000

    Electric winch $ 3 000

    Refrigeration $ 1 500

    Respray $ 6 000

    Total $ 98 500

Add survey, slipping, rego and the like and you have no
