    The Creepies

    By William R. Hicks

    Under your bed

    In your closet

    The attic or basement

From where do the creepies come?

    Usually at night

    While you lie asleep

    To take you away

    It’s time for inspection

    To check out their chattel

    I walk in my sleep

And look up at the stars

    Joe screams in darkness

    And falls out of bed

    Dreams turn into nightmares

    Bogeymen or hobgoblins

    Specters or demons of old

    They cometh

    To cultivate their stock

    Servants from beyond

    Independent of space

    Unbound to time

    Behind the curtain

    Outside the window

On the roof or in the back room

    Where do the creepies lurk?

    Watchers over the herd

    Shepherds of the flock

    Keepers of the crop

    Glimpses here and there

    Buried deep in our minds

    Dreams within dreams

The creepies are coming for you…

From where do the creepies come?

School was out for the summer and I had no baseball, football or soccer game coming up. I was compelled to get out of bed; I sat up and looked straight ahead at our closet. One of the doors was cracked open slightly and it was pitch black inside. That’s odd, I thought. Those doors are always closed. I climbed out of bed and slowly walked over towards the closet while dragging my feet; Joe and I would occasionally leave toys and games lying about on the floor and I wasn’t about to step or trip on anything. I moved closer to the door and reached out to push it shut. I could feel a coolness coming from the closet—there was some broken drywall inside our closet and a
