    Prologue

I’ll be back before you know it, Lillie.

Lillie closed her eyes, trying to keep tears from falling as Alex pulled her close to his body.

Just one more trip. The money I make from this will help us get out of Boston for good.

Lillie knew she had to be strong. She would put on a brave face for her husband. She would not make a scene.

I want our children to have a better life than growing up in a dirty city. You know we have to leave for that to happen.

He was right, of course. In a city such as Boston the Irish were treated as a servant class, and sometimes even worse than that.

But when Alex mentioned our children, all of Lillie’s resolve broke down. She rolled over and faced him with tears streaming down her cheeks. "I don’t care about the money, Alex! We can make do with what we have. India is so far away! There are diseases there! Please don’t risk yourself like this."

Alex wiped away one of the tears on her face with his thumb. I have to go. I said I would take care of you and I will. You’re my only family now. I won’t have my wife starve when we move to a new town. You’ll be safe staying with your uncle while I’m gone.

Lillie met Alex’s intense blue gaze and realized that there would be no changing his mind. You can’t take the stubborn out of the Irish, her uncle had often said. When will you be back? she finally asked after taking a calming breath.

"Six to eight months I would say. Captain Koger keeps a tight schedule and the Emily is a fast ship. So assuming whatever merchandise we’re delivering and picking up doesn’t cause any problems…eight months at the most."

    Eight months…

Alex brushed his lips with hers. When I get back we can start a new life. And a family.

Their kiss deepened. Tomorrow would come soon enough.

    Chapter 1

He had been so handsome that day he walked into the flower shop she worked at. His wavy brown hair looked freshly wind-tousled, his skin browned from long hours of working in the sun.

    A dozen lilies, please.

Lillie had smiled weakly at him, wondering who the lucky woman was that would get the bouquet she was arranging. She felt a ridiculous pang of jealousy. She didn’t even know the man! He was obviously a sailor, and no doubt had a dozen lady friends.

"Would you like to write a note on the card?" she asked him.

    No note.

Oh? Are you a secret admirer? she could not help but ask. She hoped she sounded like she was teasing.

He grinned at her as though he saw straight through her comment. Nope. But they are for a special lady.

Lillie felt her shoulders droop slightly in disappointment.

They’re to remember my mum. I always buy a bouquet on the anniversary of her death. Lilies were her favorite.

My name is Lillie, she blurted out, unable to help herself.

He laughed. Alex Hayes. A pleasure to meet you, Miss Lillie. With that he handed her the money for the flowers and walked out.

Lillie tucked a loose tendril of dark hair behind her ear and eyed the train pulling into the station with a kind of detached resolve. She was done with crying. She had no tears left to shed. Grief had stripped away everything but her will to survive.

The train stopped and the conductor blew his whistle. A flood of people exited the
