Inácio Ramos was only ten years old when he demonstrated an unwavering musical calling. His father, a musician at the imperial chapel, taught him the basics of his art, together with those of grammar, of which he knew little. He was a poor artist whose sole merit lay in his tenor and in the skill with which he performed sacred music. As a result, Inácio learned music better than he did the language, and at fifteen he knew more about flats than about verbs. Even so, he knew enough to read about the history of music and of the great composers. Reading beguiled him even more; he was drawn to his calling with all of his heart, and before long he was a first-rate fiddler.
The fiddle was the first instrument he chose, as it seemed to correspond most closely to the feelings of his soul. All the same, it didn’t satisfy him, and he dreamed of something better. One day an old German, who wowed the audience by playing the cello, came to Rio de Janeiro. Inácio went to hear him. His excitement was tremendous;
