About this ebook
Andre sees things in his dreams and his heart yearns for more, but he doesn’t know it yet. Bent on gathering data for his doctoral thesis on Japanese folklore, Andre finds more than he ever hoped for. When an informant suggests that Abe no Seimei, an Onmyoji, or yin yang magician of the Heian Period, is still alive as myth claims, Andre is intrigued. Legend claims that Seimei was the son of a magical fox, and that he cannot die. Andre is not so gullible as to believe such nonsense, but he checks it out anyway. When he meets the man who calls himself Seimei, the very foundation of his belief system crumbles under his power. His world changed forever, Andre finds that he cannot be satisfied until he knows it all. He must know Seimei, and he gets what he wants, but the cost of it was not what he expected.

Prologue
Andre looked into the gloom of the thick yeddo spruce forest. The porch wrapped around the wooden house, whose doors and walls were made of painted rice paper. He stepped off the wooden porch and saw a flattened piece of red clay on the floor. The impression of a magatama, the wish-fulfilling gem, had been embedded into its surface by its maker. He picked up another and marveled at the design of a gnarled tree on it. Looking up, he saw that the roof was covered with the tiles, which were weighed down with large rocks in spots where they seemed to be blowing off. Such a traditional house had to be very old, he thought.
The gentle noise made by a shishiodoshi, a bamboo garden fountain, was calming and rhythmic as the wooden piece filled, then clicked down to empty into the small stream that ran through the compound. He was calm, but where was he? Andre was aware that he might be dreaming, but it seemed so real. A wind caressed his face gently, bringing the salty scent of the ocean. The tree above him responded by showering him with delicate pink petals. The sounds of crickets and frogs suddenly stopped.
Andre’s eyes were drawn to the edge of the forest. In the distance, he saw the shadowy forms moving, each carrying a lantern with an eerie greenish flame. His legs were leaden as he tried to will them to move. He could only gape at the sight.
It was a wedding procession of the sort he’d only read about in his studies of ancient Japan. Several figures leading the party held pieces of foxfire as they walked. Musicians followed them playing ancient
