About this ebook

What does the Bible say about Miracles, Signs and Wonders? If you are looking for a Biblical exposition that is not steeped in jargon and deep theological terms, yet is still profoundly Scriptural in its approach, this book may be just what you are looking for.

The context in which it was developed is in Africa where everything from Christian churches to pagan institutions are chasing after miracles. In this setting many new believers are searching for the truth about miracles and the signs and wonders being talked about all around them.
Many have gone the route of following after many leaders who claimed to be miracle workers. They abound here. Yet they have been left empty as they were once again led down a path of promises that came up empty.

This book is the outgrowth of looking for a simple way to show new Christians what the Bible says about miracles, signs and wonders. Yet to do it without filling in details, simply put, to let the Scriptures speak for themselves. In our world today so many have gone running after miracles and looking for a quick fix for their problems. Just like in the days of Christ! Men are seeking after signs. Yet the Scriptures are so very clear when taken in context about the purpose and use of miracles, signs and wonders. By defining words, sentences and paragraphs it becomes extremely obvious to all who seek the truth just what these miracles are all about, how they are to be governed when they are legitimate and what to do when we face counterfeits.

    Introduction

Hello, my name is John and this is the story of how I came to understand what the Bible has to say about miracles, tongues, prophets, and the sign gifts.

I grew up in Botswana and spent most of my life there. On a recent visit to Francistown, I met a man at the taxi rank who was passing out gospel papers. This man was one who seemed to be serious about following what the Bible had to say and said he loved Jesus Christ. I was very interested in talking with him. You see, there was a subject that had been bothering me for quite some time.

Many years ago in the church that I was attending, there was a man who prayed over me. At that time, he told me that he had the word of knowledge as a spiritual gift. He then proceeded to use this gift in my life and tell me what God wanted for my life. He told me that I had the spirit of discernment and that I would soon be able to work miracles.

I thought this was strange, but I began to listen to what he had to say and tried to follow his advice about speaking in tongues and healing and miracles. The prophet at our church taught me how to speak in tongues by simply letting sounds come out of my mouth until I was uttering sounds that people called tones. They said I had the gift of tongues.

Soon I was very involved in our church using these spiritual gifts. Most of the people at our church thought that I was a very spiritual man. However, I had serious questions about these gifts that others claimed that I had. As I read my Bible I did not find that the teaching I was being given matched what God said. This concerned me very much.

So when I met this man at the taxi rank in Francistown and we began talking about the spiritual gifts, I was very interested in what he had to say. You see, I was very concerned that what I was doing was what God taught in His Word. Had I just fooled myself or was it possible that the Bible had a better answer?

I met several times with this man and we discussed what the Bible had to say about the different spiritual gifts. I want to share with you in this booklet some of the teachings that I learned from this man as we met several times to discuss these issues.

    Chapter One

    The Word of Knowledge

The Word of Knowledge is one of several spiritual gifts that are listed in our Bible. To understand this particular gift, we need to have a little understanding of the spiritual gifts themselves. There are 3 listings of spiritual gifts found in the Bible. The first list is found in Romans chapter 12, the second list is found in First Corinthians chapter 12, and the third list is found in Ephesians chapter 4. All of the spiritual gifts fall into one of two categories.

First, there are the service gifts which Christians are given to be able to minister to others and be a blessing and a help. These gifts are seen in Christian lives even today. In fact, the Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit of God gives gifts to every person at the time that they are born again. These gifts are given for the purpose of giving to others, helping to meet their needs, and to be a blessing.

The second category of spiritual gifts are sign gifts. These were gifts that were given for the purpose of certifying that what was said by the Apostles was really from God. These are miraculous types of gifts and therefore are different from the service gifts. They are also recorded in these passages.

    Knowledge and Wisdom

As we consider the Word of Knowledge we find that it is listed only two times in our Bible: one time in the list of spiritual gifts in First Corinthians chapter twelve, and again in First Corinthians chapter thirteen. What is knowledge? And what is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?

The simplest way to explain it is to think about a cell phone. You know what a cell phone is. You know what it does. You know that it can be used in many different ways. You can use it to make a phone call, to send an SMS, to take a picture, to listen to an MP3, to play a game—and there are many other uses for cell phones, depending on the kind of phone that you have.

Knowledge is to know that a cell phone can do those things. Wisdom is when you know how
